Book Arts Workshops with MCBA
Why consider a residency with MCBA? We are experienced at collaborating with teachers and staff of all grade levels and age groups to plan comprehensive book arts residencies. From a small series of workshops to a semester-long or multi-year program, we can help you integrate the visual and literary excitement of the book arts into your curriculum goals. Experience the book arts at your school, in MCBA studios or through a combination of both.
Adding a book arts facet to your curriculum will help engage your students in:
- A new art form
- Creative and personal expression
- Deeper understanding of a subject matter
- Pride in personal accomplishments
- Collaborations with other students and across subjects
- An understanding of the creative process
- Hands-on learning through artistic process
STUDENTS SUCCEED
The book arts dwell in the visual arts, yet students typically don't feel they need to be an artist in order to create their own book. The book form provides a familiar, accessible starting place for students. Our experienced artist-instructors take students through a step-by-step process leading to the successful completion of their own book arts project.
Every residency is custom designed. We start with your curriculum goals and objectives, then work together to build a dynamic book arts project that strives to be motivating and meaningful for your students.
A residency may include one or more of the following activities: traditional or sculptural bookmaking, papermaking, paper decoration or printmaking. An age and curriculum-appropriate introduction to book arts and instruction method is planned with classroom teachers. A teacher in-service can be included with each residency.
APPLYING FOR A RESIDENCY
MCBA accepts applications for residencies throughout the year. Please allow two to three months for the application and planning process. We encourage early registration - our schedule fills quickly, especially for the spring.
GRANTS
Grants are often available to schools for arts residencies. Research grant opportunities early in the year to be sure that you have adequate time to plan and implement the project if your proposal is accepted. MCBA can provide you with supporting information for writing your grant such as activity descriptions, background information about MCBA and artist(s), and a proposed budget.
Consult our Series formats below as a starting point for discussing the type of residency that will meet your students needs.
Note: A single session is one class period, or approximately 1 hour.
SERIES OPTIONS
SHORT STORY SERIES
A perfect introduction to the book arts, this series is designed for a single grade level. Students produce a single book structure as a vessel for ideas, writing or artwork. Content often includes class anthologies or individual student writing.
Time Commitment:
2 planning sessions with all classroom teachers
2 to 3 sessions with students
CHAPTER SERIES
This multi-faceted book arts project is based on a single theme that is carried to a deeper level. The residency may involve journal making along with a comprehensive book arts project. It may be a multi-media book that incorporates writing, text, a CD, artwork, etc. or collaboration between disciplines.
Time Commitment:
2 to 3 planning sessions with all classroom teachers
4 or more sessions with students
LIBRARY SERIES
Involve multiple grade levels or your entire school through this residency. Interpret a central school theme for the year with different projects at each grade level. Choose different curriculum areas or involve the entire school in the same project. Students are able to build on skills progressively when this program is planned over several years. A coordinator from the school is required in order to successfully conduct this residency.
Time Commitment:
Planning sessions based on scope of project
At least 1 meeting with all classroom teachers
At least 2 sessions with students
AUTHOR SERIES (TEACHERS ONLY)
Teachers will learn skills to incorporate the book arts into their own curriculum. Learn grade level-appropriate book structures in a hands-on environment. Most books can be made with art materials on hand or with minimal additions. Teachers will receive supply, prep and resource lists as well as written instructions for each book form. Instructions on using the studio cutting equipment at MCBA can also be included.
Time Commitment:
1 initial planning session
3 or more workshop sessions
