It is my pleasure to welcome you to an exhibition of new work celebrating the inaugural series of MCBA/Jerome Foundation Book Arts Mentorships.

In October 2006, six emerging artists practicing in fields other than book arts were selected to participate in a unique program designed to inspire creative expression through the traditional and contemporary approaches advanced by MCBA. The artists participating in the program are diverse in style, approach and expertise: mural and mixed media artist Bethany Kalk; photographer Julia Babb; fiber artist Kathleen Richert; drawing and installation artist Cherith Lundin; poet Molly Van Avery; and sculptor/mixed media artist Cecilia Ramón.

Through special workshops, master classes and individual meetings with program mentors Bridget O'Malley, Paulette Myers-Rich and Wilber “Chip” Schilling, program participants developed new ways of thinking about their work and the media they use to express themselves. They also discovered the remarkable versatility offered by the book format.

Book: Unlearned represents the journey of learning a new discipline, experimenting with traditional methods, expanding concepts through contemporary techniques, and integrating previous expertise with fresh knowledge. The work presented in this exhibition represents this journey and demonstrates the ever-evolving and inclusive nature of book arts.

MCBA wishes to thank the six program participants for their dedication and exceptional work, the three program mentors for their wisdom and willingness to share their craft, and the Jerome Foundation for its continued support of the book arts.
