Tango originated in Argentina and Uruguay at the end of the 19th century and has become the emblematic dance and music of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. “Today many Argentines maintain that tango lyrics have helped them crystallize, understand and cope with feelings of loss and helplessness,” writes Maria Susana Azzi, tango historian. Tango lyrics have become part of everyday speech and popular culture.
