MYERS-RICH A palimpsest is writing material, primarily vellum or parchment, which was reused after the erasure of earlier writing. The historical context refers to the activity of monks in scriptoriums, who would scrape the ink off the surface of an existing page of text in order to recycle the material, which was scarce and dear. Sometimes, it was done to scrape out heretical texts that were then written over with sacred writing in order to sanctify the material. It was an act of effacement and reforming the page. |
