Book Art Critique Seminar

Using the Critical Response Method developed by choreographer Liz Lerman, this group meeting is designed to give objective, supportive feedback on larger, in-progress projects. This class provides structure, accountability, and space for exchanging technical and conceptual ideas. Come prepared to share in-progress work and constructive feedback.

Origami: Lanterns

Introduction to Design: Notan Intensive

Learn how to transform a flat two-dimensional surface into a dynamic visual composition through the use of Notan, Japanese for light-dark design. Notan focuses on the interaction between positive and negative spaces, which is exemplified in such ancient images as the Yin-Yang symbol. Through a series of fun paper-based exercises, learn how to design more effectively in a way that will have a positive impact on your work in the book arts, printmaking, and beyond.

Origami: Chinese Zodiac

Calligraphy: Gothic Black Letter

Gothic black letter calligraphy looks impressively difficult, and is surprisingly one of the easier hands to learn. Using broad-edged dip pens and walnut ink, learn both the minuscule and majuscule letters (lower and upper case). Explore some different visual weights possible by manipulating pen scale on blocks of text writing, and will look at the work of some contemporary gothic lettering artists.

Dirty Works: Papercutting in Full Color

Explore papercutting as a way to create imagery. Make and take a batch of unique cards with hand-cut designs and multi-colored layers, using any kind of imagery you can dream up. Then learn a simple binding technique to convert cards into little pocket journals.

Movables and Popups in Artists’ Books

Lift, Spin, Pull and Pop! Learn techniques to create dimension and movement in your work. We’ll start with a series of exercises to understand fundamental paper engineering principles. As we explore a variety of folds, you’ll learn to make basic pop-up structures using free-hand shapes and templates that can be used to make more complicated designs. Then learn how to incorporate movables such as tabs, paper rivets, and spinners. There will be an emphasis on understanding fold theory as well as guided time to explore an independent project.

Origami: Valentine Heart Box

In this Valentine’s Day class, learn to fold a unique origami heart box for or with a sweetie. Constructed of two pieces of paper that join at the “v” of the heart, this box is opened by pulling one half of the heart out of the other. A variety of papers will be provided and a great way to use your handmade papers.

Pointed Pen Calligraphy I

Copperplate is a script style of calligraphy that gets its unique look from the use of a flexible, pointed pen nib that allows variations in thickness by writing with pressure on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. Beginning in the 18th century, it filled the need for a business correspondence script until the arrival of the typewriter. This small, elegant, fun-to-write hand will be used to letter a personal greeting.

Introduction to Book Arts

A perfect introduction to book arts! First, get your feet wet (literally!) in the paper studio, exploring the Western tradition of papermaking. Next, use screen printing to layer colors and shapes in a collaborative project. Investigate letterpress as you set type and create prints on the Vandercook press. Finally, bind a selection of your handmade and printed papers together into simple folded and pamphlet-stitched books. With a focus on learning several basic techniques, this class is perfect for experimentation and play across disciplines with a look at the relationship between material and process.

Origami: Mini Books and Bookcase

Introduction to Design: Color and Composition

Developing a visual language is essential for any artist. This two-day workshop will provide participants with a framework for creating images through exercises that emphasize experimentation and play. With a focus on color relationships and their effect on composition, methods will include collage, drawing, watercolor painting, and rubber stamp carving and printing.
