Manuscript Illumination: Go for the Gold

Participants will learn the basic methods and requirements for tools, materials and techniques for traditional (and more modern) Western manuscript decoration. We will learn a few ways in which to apply gold leaf onto pages. This is an excellent introduction to the traditional hierarchy of media application in medieval manuscripts coupled with contemporary uses. Students will learn a variety of useful decorative graphic embellishments, including “tree of life” and space-filling decorative baubles. Students will also learn the use of goose quills and how to prepare them for illumination. In class, students will produce a small number of decorated cards that may be used for guides to future projects.

Hardcover Journal in a Day

Using fine materials and decorative paper, students will learn to sew pages together, then build a decorative case binding and put it all together to make a useful yet elegant book. Raised Cord Binding with Exotic Wood Covers and Clasp Closure

Here is a beautiful structure that substitutes sturdy flax paper for leather on a raised cord binding with exotic hardwood covers. Using techniques normally reserved for leather binding, flax paper will be molded over the raised cords in the traditional manner. A leather clasp will be attached using brass pins and a grommet to secure the book. Alternatives for closures and spine materials will be discussed. The completed book is a faithful replica of early book structures sturdy enough for any use.

Introduction to Book Repair

Participants will learn to diagnose book conditions and perform simple repairs. Techniques covered will include reattaching boards, cleaning and relining the spine, and board and paper repair. Students will work at their own pace with individual instruction for particular issues. Appropriate for both beginning and experienced binders. Students should bring three books in need of repair to the first class (no leather). Class size is limited!

Introduction to Bookbinding

This introductory class is suitable for the novice or more experienced student who desires additional guidance and instruction. Students will learn binding skills and techniques with emphasis on making books in the home studio. Beginning with an in-depth examination of materials and tools used in binding (including training on MCBA’s large cutting equipment), students will learn about adhesives, paper grain, interpreting instructions from bookbinding manuals, covering boards and making beautiful corners. A series of books will be produced, including a multi-section book sewn on tapes. Printers and papermakers who wish to expand their work into book form will also benefit from this class.

Longstitch Book with Exotic Wood Covers

Add a spine of exotic wood to your longstitch structure repertoire. Students will use African or South American hardwoods for the spine piece. Choose from a rainbow of colors: zebrawood, canarywood, rosewood, bloodwood and purpleheart are some of the possibilities. All of these woods will be used in their natural state with no coloring or dyes. Select cover paper to complement your spine choice and then select a spine design and drill the holes from available templates. Longstitch sewing will be done through the wooden spine piece, resulting in stunning contrasts. Optional embellishment of topstitching will be covered. The finished books will be a chunky 7 x 6 inches—great for sketching or journals.

15th Century Paper Binding

As printing technology spread across Europe, the need for a new binding style arose, creating a paperback book for the masses. Using handmade paper, students will construct a paperback book modeled on the 15th century method, sewn on alum tawed leather thongs with endbands laced through a folded paper cover. Using either leather or vellum, students will add a closure to complete their books. This is a beautiful and historic structure with a variety of contemporary uses.

Edge Decoration

Edge decoration adds a further design element to almost any binding. Students will learn several methods for decorating the edges of their books. Gouache painting, gold foil, graphite, sprinkle and gauffering will be covered and samples of other methods will be shown and discussed. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a combination of these techniques. Participants should bring a text block with no covers (or they may purchase one in class) and a couple of paperback books for practice.

Hardware for Books

This class takes inspiration from the beautiful, yet functional metal hardware on early books to give your book structures contemporary flair. The first day will be spent fashioning clasps for books. Several different types of clasps and closures will be demonstrated, and students will design and create their own on a sample book. The second day will focus on bosses, corners, and decorative elements in metal. Students will receive an additional materials list from the instructor.

Boxmaking Made Easy

This popular, intensive weekend workshop will focus on three types of boxes: a small cube with a fitted lid, a cigar-style box with a hinged lid, and a portfolio box. Each box will be constructed from book board and covered with decorative paper. This is a perfect class in which to learn or enhance your binding and boxmaking skills. Through samples and discussion, students will explore a variety of papers and methods for decoration with possibilities for more complicated structures.

Coptic Binding with Exotic Wood Covers

An essential structure in the bookbinders arsenal, Coptic bindings are both decorative and useful. And, exotic hardwoods combine beautifully with Coptic sewing. Polymer Clay Books: Inlays and Onlays

Polymer clay is a unique and versatile material that lends itself to intricate yet sturdy constructions suitable for use in bookbinding. In this class, students will learn how to create their own design using inlays and onlays of clay for a clay collage cover. The Art of the Box

Boxes are all about material: use interesting materials and you will make interesting boxes. In this intensive weekend class, we will make two such boxes, both with feet, finials and sliding doors—all from an exuberant mix of patterned papers. The first box will be constructed of pre-cut parts. Each participant will cut materials for the second box to their desired dimensions. The basics of boxmaking—how to measure, cut, glue and cover; and the preparation and uses of adhesives—are as important as the design elements, and will be a focus of this class.

A Small Box Filled with Books

The question answered: What shall I put in this beautiful little box? This workshop will provide a review of basic bookbinding and boxmaking techniques, with an emphasis on considerations for working on a small scale. Participants will construct a small box to house three even smaller exposed-spine, hardcover books (sewn on tapes, longstitch and buttonhole). Featuring a hinged lid with an attractive button closure, the box will be covered with papers chosen to complement the book covers. Samples and discussion will explore options for further exploration into artists’ book and box combinations.

Bookbinding II: Acquiring Mastery

Students will continue their study of structures with a full cloth binding with a rounded spine. Digital Letterpress: Printing with Polymer Plates

Color Relief Printing: Exploration and Experimentation

Have you wanted to learn various printing techniques to create your own series of prints? Or, have you already learned basic carving and printing and now want to explore further various types of relief printing? In this class we will experiment with and explore various types of relief printmaking in color. Start with a basic design and then learn how to create a color print using reductive or multiple blocks. Try printing on different types of paper and test the difference in carving linoleum and wood as well as printing with both oil and water based inks. Or try it all and decide which method you like best. No previous experience necessary. Class time will include sharing ideas for prints, demonstrations and in-class work time. Photopolymer “Solar Plate” Printing

This intensive weekend workshop explores a non-toxic printmaking technology, using polymer plates exposed by the sun and processed with water. Would you like to try a matrix that has a light sensitive emulsion onto which hand-drawn, painterly, and/or digital imagery can be applied? This workshop invites students with all levels of printmaking experience to explore the unique qualities of intaglio and relief printmaking using photopolymer plates. Japanese Papermaking
