VISITING ARTIST
Paul Johnson combines his career as a professional paper artist (he has work in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, Library of Congress, the University of California at Berkeley, Yale University and the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York) with that of teacher and author. He has published several books including Literacy Through the Book Arts and A Book of One’s Own: Developing Literacy Through Making Books.

Johnson’s approach to book art in the classroom can be characterized by his respect for children as nascent storytellers and illustrators. His books and workshops emphasize the importance of both visual and linguistic literacy. This interdisciplinary approach fits perfectly with the process of making books and allows educators to teach in and through the book arts.

Johnson travels around the world conducting teacher workshops, and directed The Book Art Project at the Manchester Metropolitan University (United Kingdom) 1986 to 1997.
