Pre-Biennial Workshop: Papermaking in the Islamic World

Learn about papermaking in the Islamic world and its role in the history of paper. Instruction will cover fiber preparation and techniques specific to Islamic-world papermaking. Sheet formation and production will be the focus of the first day. On the second day, simple surface finishing techniques such as brush dyeing, sizing, and burnishing will be shown and applied to the finished sheets. Participants will leave with a sampling of the various techniques on their own Islamic-world papers.
