Begin by looking at examples of screen printed ephemera that communicate a unique message. Then, make creations of your own! Instruction will focus on low-tech methods of creating imagery for screen printing using methods such as: tape and waxed paper with ink, and China markers, and ink pens with photo emulsion. Participants will communicate their own content by designing and screen printing patches, pins, tote bags, t-shirts, posters, and a collaborative book.

For families with children ages 3-5

Get a jump on literacy in interactive pre-school book arts classes with Ellen Ferrari. Children and adults work together to make paper, print patterns, shapes and letters and construct colorful books in a fun environment. Each class begins by reading a story and continues by investigating examples produced by working artists. Vocabulary, tools and processes will also be introduced. These workshops emphasize visual decision-making, improving manual dexterity and a love of books and can be repeated over and over again as projects change each session. Dress for mess.

The cases in which Bound and Unbound IV will be displayed are 80" long, 28 1/2" wide, and 8 1/2" deep. The University Libraries reserve the right to refuse work difficult to exhibit due to excessive size, weight, or difficulty in presentation.

Copperplate is a script style of calligraphy that gets its unique look from the use of a flexible, pointed pen nib that allows variations in thickness by writing with pressure on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. Beginning in the 18th century, it filled the need for a business correspondence script until the arrival of the typewriter. This small, elegant, fun-to-write hand will be used to letter a personal greeting.

The versatile Coptic binding is essential for any binder’s repertoire. This workshop is for those who already know how to wrap covers and fold signatures. The two-needle and four-needle binding will be executed on two books with prepared covers and quires provided to allow for plenty of time to learn the stitch and its options. Instruction will cover how to space sewing stations, two-color sewing, options for the length of the link stitch, and various options for cover materials.

Join Ellen Ferrari for Saturday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or) adult/child teams may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

A slipcase offers a book protection from dust and sunlight while still leaving the spine visible on the shelf. In this class we will learn three variations on this useful enclosure. On the first day, we will make two simple slipcases, the first made from a light card stock and a second made with card stock and book cloth. On the second day we will make a slipcase using book board lined with paper and covered with book cloth. Bring a hardcover book that you will make a slipcase for in class.

Experiment with patterns and begin to build your technique and palette with guidance from a seasoned practitioner. Take home marbled paper samples as well as a handout. This workshop is a prerequisite for Extreme Marbling.

Hand presses are also extremely versatile tools for artists, still in daily use in studios around the world. Invented in the 19th century by French binder Alexis Bradel, this binding was meant to be a temporary binding. Refined by others, it developed into a permanent binding sturdier than a case binding. It works well with small or large multi-signature books. In this workshop we will make a small paper covered book and a larger book with the signatures rounded, backed, and covered with a three piece cloth case.
