Based on a 17th century book structure, this innovative glued binding is an ideal way to turn your artwork into a book format. It requires no sewing so there is no thread to interfere with any image or text that crosses through the fold of the page. Each folded two-page spread can be a print, painting or digital image that is glued to the back of the following page, producing a lightweight and flexible book. with Tom Spence
Saturday, October 14; 9am-noon
For children ages 6-8
$55.50 regular, 49.95 member, $38.85 low-income

In this fun comics class, students are introduced to the standard building blocks for producing a successful comic story: character and story development, conceptualizing a main protagonist; developing a narrative for their main characters to inhabit. Once we have the building blocks down, we'll practice our new found skills in our own hand-bound sketchbook while also learning to utilize the variety of effects that different kinds of panels have on story, how they interact with one another across the page, and how text and dialogue are used to enhance our work. The remainder of class will be dedicated to allowing students to apply their story to a hand made mini-comic book they'll create in studio space at MCBA!

First, we'll create a hand made haunted house hidden page book in the (scary, spine tingling) studios at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Then we'll read some classic, age-appropriate ghost stories, and talk about why the idea of a haunted house is so thrilling to so many of us. Once character development and basic story form is discussed, we'll get to work writing our own ghost stories to put in our newly created book. But, this is no ordinary book..... it holds a secret hiding place just waiting to surprise and thrill your readers!

Long Stitch Book with Hardwood Spine

Long Stitch Book with Hardwood Spine
with Sue Bjerke
Saturday, November 4; 9am-5pm
All skill levels welcome

Add something new to your long stitch repertoire: a drilled wooden spine. Use hardwoods from Africa and South America in a rainbow of colors: canarywood, rosewood, bloodwood, and purpleheart are among the possibilities. Cover weight papers will be selected to complement your wood spine, which will be drilled in class from a template. Long stitch sewing through the wood spine will result in stunning contrasts. Optional embellishment of top-stitching on the book covers will be discussed and demonstrated. The final book will be a chunky 7 x 6 inches (approximately), great for sketching or journals.

Charting an Art Practice

Charting an Art Practice
with Regula Russelle
Thursdays: November 9 & 16; 6-8pm

All artists, from professional to amateur, grapple with: how to make room for artmaking in our daily lives, how to respect our limitations and make peace with uncertainty, how to create realistic goals and work toward them, and how to connect with an audience. This participatory workshop explores how to shape a life in the (book) arts through writing, “map making,” conversation, and by considering examples.
