Letterpress: $35 ($30 members)
Set type, make polymer plates, print on MCBA's presses and enjoy the fellowship of other artists. Reservations are first-come-first-served, and participants must have completed an introductory course on the press they are reserving (Vandercook, platen, sign). Fee covers inks and solvents; supply your own paper.

Screenprinting: $25 ($20 members)
Prep screens, expose and print in MCBA's darkroom and printing studio, and enjoy the fellowship of other artists. Fee covers screen use and emulsions; supply your own inks and paper.

Binding: $20 ($15 members)
Open Studio provides access to binding tools, cutting equipment, and fellowship! Work on your own projects in the company of other artists in a friendly and supportive environment. Fee covers tool use plus some consumables (thread and PVA); supply your own bookboard, cloth, paper and other needs.

Paper Beater: $20 ($15 members)
Beat fiber for paper for future sheet-forming. The studio's two Valley beaters can each hold approximately .75lb.(dry) of fiber (rag or half-stuff), and the Reina beater can hold up to 2lb.(dry) of fiber (half-stuff only). When you register, please specify which beater you'd like to reserve. Pre-weigh and pre-soak all fibers to be beaten. If you have taken a papermaking course but are not familiar with our paper beaters, Paper Beater trainings are offered every month. Through hands-on training you will learn the capabilities of each of MCBA's paper beaters, and how to use them correctly and safely. Completion of this training will allow you to rent this equipment and use it independently.

Open Studio provides access to marbling tools and equipment, as well as fellowship! Work on your own projects in the company of other artists in a friendly and supportive environment. Fee covers use of 16×20″ tanks of carrageenan*, alum, brushes, cups and eyedroppers; supply your own paints* and paper. Participants must register at least three days in advance.

*Carrageenan is used for western-style marbling only. If you plan to practice suminagashi, please call the Shop to let a staff member know so carrageenan is not prepared for you unnecessarily.
*Paint: While many different kinds of inks, paints, and watercolors may be used in the marbling process, we recommend using Golden Fluid Acrylics with our equipment.

This introductory intensive offers a thorough introduction to typesetting and presswork. Students will start with printing a collaborative project, and then design and print an edition of broadsides with text and a simple image of their choosing. Through the course of their projects, participants will learn the basics of Vandercook press operation, studio tools and procedures, typography, and a variety of printmaking techniques, focusing on creation of a beautiful edition of broadsides (prints), expertly printed. Perfect for beginners or those who wish to gain additional experience with presses, this class is a prerequisite for Letterpress II.

This week-long paper marbling workshop using acrylic paints is designed for both beginning and more experienced marblers. Through instruction and demonstrations, you will learn or review the basic recipes for carrageenan, etc. and the classic patterns. Expand your marbling horizons by marbling on wooden items and a variety of formed paper masks. We will also include side-bar discussions on such things as tool and paint making, and marbling fabrics for those interested. This workshop offers time to build your technique and trouble-shoot with seasoned practitioners as well as develop your color palette and cultivate your marbling style.

All artists, from professional to amateur, grapple with: How to make room for artmaking in our daily lives, how to respect our limitations and make peace with uncertainty, how to create realistic goals and work toward them, and how to connect with an audience. This participatory workshop explores how to shape a life in the (book) arts through writing, “map making,” and conversation. Concurrently, we will work on one or two small, handmade books to connect theory and practice. Techniques taught are with inexpensive tools and materials that you can use to make small books on a kitchen table or a desk.

Japanese Woodblock Printing

Make a multi-color woodblock print from start to finish while learning a portable, water-based printing method. Japanese woodblock printing uses watercolor inks applied with a brush and printed by hand, which makes this an easy technique to continue at home. Learn to separate colors, transfer a design, carve a woodblock, and sharpen tools along with techniques for printing gradations and textures. Students are asked to bring a 5x7” drawing to the first class. Supply fee includes a set of carving tools for students to take home. For students that already have carving tools, the supply fee can be reduced to $50. This workshop may be repeated and the instructor will adapt the material to both beginning and advanced students.

A Rainbow of Possibilities: Color Approaches for Handmade Paper

This team-taught, week-long intensive will cover innovative uses of aqueous disperse pigments, an introduction to easy-to-use natural dyes including walnut and indigo, and other ways of coloring pulp and finished dried sheets. The first days will focus on paper production with a review of appropriate fibers and pulp processing for different coloring processes. By the end of the week all participants will have produced a beautiful portfolio of papers that make use of all the processes covered and a variety of fibers, accompanied by recipes and directions for continued production. Experienced papermakers are encouraged to bring papers they have produced for dyeing.

It’s time to do something new in cartonnage: a clock. The project will use your cartonnage skills and for newcomers, all the box-making basics will be covered. As we make the clock housing we will include discussion of how use a plinth, make curved sides, and to make variations on design and size. Students will learn that one basic structure can be developed into a variety of sizes. Each structure is unique and makes a great gift! Modern cartonnage grows out of the long standing French tradition of covering small utility containers with various decorative materials and offers a great use for your marbled papers. In this class, we will review the essential elements of making unique containers from book board, then covering those structures with decorative papers. Students will learn the basics of design and construction using various boards, as well as the ins and outs of measuring, cutting, and applying decorative papers. All structural components will be hand cut in class, the supply fee covers the clock works.

Formation: A Juried Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers Opening Reception

Formation includes 50 works by members of the Guild of Book Workers. These works span the genre of “book arts”, including artist books, fine bindings, and broadsides. The exhibition is juried by three outstanding artists and Guild members – Sarah Smith, Coleen Curry, and Graham Patten. The exhibition will travel to five locations around the country, beginning at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and closing at the North Bennet Street School. The annual Guild of Book Workers Standards of Excellence conference will coincide with the show being at MCBA, hopefully providing opportunity for added conversation and exposure of the world of book production to a larger community of people.

Patterns are an essential technique of marbling. Designed for those who have experience marbling, this workshop will focus on patterns, such as nonpareil, chevron, and their variations. Through instruction and demonstrations, learn how a single traditional marbling pattern is a starting point for multiple variations. Experiment with patterns and begin to build your technique and palette with guidance from a seasoned practitioner. Take home marbled paper samples as well as a handout. This workshop is a prerequisite for Patterns II.

Join us for a special day-long tour of the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) at Saint John’s Abbey and University. Experience original folios from The Saint John’s Bible and explore rare printed books and manuscripts from the HMML collection. Join others in the MCBA community for this unique chance to engage with these incredible works up-close-and-personal, without glass cases.

Tour participants will also have the opportunity to join the Benedictine monastic community for noon prayer in the mid-century modern Abbey Church. A relaxing lunch in the Great Hall Founders Room will break up the day, and there will be some free time to explore the campus grounds.

Please note, there is a great deal of walking and stairs on the campus and guests will have to move from building to building throughout the day. Tour fee includes charter bus from MCBA to Saint John’s, private tours, lunch*, and a loaf of “Johnnie” bread baked at the University.

Foils should not be limited to just stamping machines and in this workshop we will cover to both traditional and alternative decorative techniques using hand tools. We will use the different type of foils, real 23kt gold, metallic and pigmented colors, on leather, cloth and paper to show the advantages foil can have over the traditional gold leaf tooling.
