During the years when Rogers was at work on the Shakespeare, Macy asked him to design The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, with an introduction by A.A. Milne, illustrated by Arthur Rackham. It was a special publication outside the regular annual series for members, for which the holders of the copyright (Charles Scribner’s Sons) imposed a limitation of two thousand copies. The watercolor drawings by the very popular Rackham were the main selling feature, and Macy stated that he could have sold ten thousand copies. The illustrations were reproduced in full color by The Sun Engraving Company in London; the text of the ample quarto volume was set in Rogers’ choice of Linotype Baskerville and printed by Peter Beilenson at his Walpole Printing Office in Mount Vernon, New York – a gay and colorful quarto volume.
