Coffee House Press & Toothpaste Press: from Letterpress to e-Book
November 12, 2010 - January 9, 2011

Opening reception Thursday, November 11; 6:30-9pm
Brief program at 6:45pm : introduction by Milkweed Edition's Emilie Buchwald; remarks by Allan Kornblum, founder of Coffee House Press and its literary predecessor Toothpaste Press

The first publisher-in-residence at Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Allan Kornblum began his literary career studying poetry at the St. Mark's Poetry Project and the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop. In the early 1970s, he served as the editor, designer, printer, and publisher for Toothpaste Press. Since its founding in 1984, he has served as editor and publisher at Coffee House Press, which has published over 275 trade books and 35 letterpress books and pamphlets. Kornblum received an American Book Award for Special Achievement as an Editor and Publisher in 1997. Now in its twenty-sixth year, Coffee House Press is regarded as one of the premier literary publishers in the country. Noted for editorial excellence and an adventurous sense of discovery, Coffee House Press is also valued for the elegant design and production of its books. The exhibit at Open Book will showcase its legacy of letterpress as Coffee House Press begins to roll out its first e-books.

The exhibit will feature original letterpress productions from both presses and a retrospective of Coffee House Press books, including international bestseller Firmin by Sam Savage and the recently announced 2010 National Book Award finalist I Hotel by Karen Tei Yamashita.

"Reviewing forty years of Toothpaste Press and Coffee House Press books has been a pleasure," says Kornblum of the exhibit. "I think it’s even more exciting to imagine and help shape the future of this press, as well as the literary publishing environment, during the next forty years."
