Works in Paper by Sharon Sampon
June 12 - July 8, 2006

Sampon describes the work on display as "graphically oriented collage - bold and bright, with clean lines and shapes illustrating complex themes. The imagery challenges the imagination to view other worlds that may or may not coexist with our personal realities."

Describing her process, Sampon says, "My pieces are conceived rather dreamily at first, springing sometimes whole and sometimes in part from an internal vision. I prefer not to draw anything in place although I have sketched some ideas on the back of a napkin. Generally there is a central theme or concept, a few ideas and images that I want to relate, and then a vision of color and organization on the page. I use a wide variety of handmade papers from all over the world, and their colors, textures and patterns inspire me and direct my knife and scissors. I design the actual shapes of each piece in my head, envisioning the forms and transferring them directly to the paper as I cut. As the work evolves and is refined, I am influenced by world events, family dynamics, weather, and things that I see and hear daily. As a result, the design often changes to reflect these encounters, and can morph into something quite different from the original concept. The final result emerges from somewhere more unconscious and sometimes seems like a surprise, even to me."

Sampon has a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is a fine artist, photographer, filmmaker, professional graphic designer and graphic arts instructor. In Wisconsin she taught at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and most recently she has taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
