Visual journals are a wonderful tool for getting the creative juices flowing, developing new ideas and exploring materials and methods from other cultures. In this class, you will start by making a Japanese stab-binding journal. Then you learn a variety of ways to use Japanese papers into your visual journal process. These will include chigiri-e (washi paper collage), kiri-e (paper cutting), monkiri (circular patterns) and simple Asian brushwork exercises utilizing watercolor and sumi ink. By the end of the class, you will have a basic understanding of how to use a variety of Japanese materials that you will be able to continue experimenting with on your own long after the class has ended.
