Open Studios: Homebound Edition
A Conversation with Elana Schwartzman
Tuesday, May 26; 7:30pm

Tune in to Instagram Live next Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30pm for a conversation with letterpress printer and designer Elana Schwartzman, hosted by Elysa Voshell, Executive Director of MCBA! This is the second installment of our Open Studios: Homebound Edition series, which alternates each week between a live artist talk and a pre-recorded studio tour.

For the past ten years, Elana Schwartzman has operated the Minneapolis-based Fontlove Studio, a “very small letterpress shop making good-looking things for good people.” She also directs Proof Public, a collaborative group committed to making letterpress accessible to all.

Elana will talk about how Covid-19 has impacted her print shop, at first driving a wedge between her and her art practice, but ultimately inspiring her recent project: The New Day, a weekly letterpress broadsheet she sends to a growing number of subscribers. The mini newspaper is full of reader-submitted stories—each just ten words long, each capturing a different aspect of the times we’re living in. Join us!
