Introduction to Design: Exploring Book Content through Design
with Brad Widness
Six Wednesdays: February 8, 15, 22, 29, March 7, 14; 6-9pm
Great for beginners

How does the layout of a page interact with the larger book of which it is a part? In this class, we'll design and fabricate hand-bound books using sketches, photos, and verbal/visual markings. Through a combination of examples, in-class exercises, and homework assignments, this class will give you opportunities to practice page design through exercises in observational drawing, typography, collage, and both digital and "analog" approaches to image building and manipulation. Keeping in mind the fundamental design principles of continuity, sequence, ratio, and color, we'll also examine and discuss design as it relates to the work of contemporary book artists. Students are expected to bring a journal to work in, and will be given a list of suggested supplies for work at home. Supplies for in-class exercises will be provided.

Introduction to Coptic Binding
with Sue Bjerke

Students will learn to cover boards with decorative papers to make a small blank journal that opens flats for ease in use; a second model with wooden covers will also be demonstrated and made if time permits. This historical binding was developed during the second to third century in Egypt. Adapting the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, a chain (or "link stitch") was used to bind the sections together. This binding technique was used throughout the Islamic world and Eastern Christendom (Europe), and is still used in some parts of Ethiopia today.

Concept & Form: Planning Your Book Project
with visiting artist Shana Agid
Saturday, March 10; 10am-3pm and Saturday, March 17; 10am-5pm
Bookmaking experience helpful

How does one develop hunches into content for an artist's book? This class will explore methods and tools for taking fledgling ideas for a concept or your interest in a specific book form as a starting place for the design, mocking-up, and planning of an artist's book by developing content and form in close relationship to each other. We will begin with a series of exercises for creating ideas or accessing your hunches and preoccupations and then focus on how to build them into content for a book. This class is ideal both for people who are quick with content, and want to focus on how to match that content to form in book planning, as well as for those who have been making book structures, and are interested in building their capacities for creating concepts and meaning in their books. You will leave the class with one to two fully developed mock-ups that have been edited and revised over the course of the class, and are ready to be taken to the next stage of making or editioning. The instructor will also provide written instructions on all exercises undertaken in class so you can use them again.

Join this class and experience a veritable buffet of art-making forms from Minnesota Center for Book Arts, IFP MN Center for Media Arts, Northern Clay Center, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, and Textile Center. The "Five Centers for Art" join forces for a multimedia exploration of clay, bookmaking, textiles, filmmaking and printmaking. Each session will take place at a different art center and will include a brief tour of the Center plus hands-on medium-specific work with a professional teaching artist. Participants will be encouraged to stretch their creative muscles and take risks with new art forms, and will walk away from the class with five completed projects, renewed creativity, and perhaps even a lifelong passion for a new art form. Teachers: this workshop series is eligible for Continuing Education credit! Participants will receive a schedule and map for each location after registration.

This camp sold out last year; grab your spot while you can!

$195 ($175 for members of any of the five participating organizations)

Remove and Repurpose: a Handmade Paper Workshop
with Morgan Hiscocks
Saturday & Sunday, April 14-15; 10am-5pm
All skill levels welcome

This experimental papermaking workshop operates around the notion of reducing, reusing and recycling. We will be making paper from our own stuff as opposed to acquiring materials from an outside source. Fibers can be anything ranging from garden trimmings to old prints or other works on paper, to old clothing! Clothing items may be woven (not knit) 100% cotton and/or linen -- no synthetic fibers. Working together to find exciting results from the range of things gathered to put in the beater, we'll experiment with textures, inclusions, and layering different pulps to produce unique sheets. Techniques covered in this class will include cooking vegetable fibers, beater operation, and preparing fibers for beating. If you don’t have enough fibers to create your own paper pulp, we'll pool resources and work collaboratively to pull some fabulous, naturally beautiful sheets of paper.

Biblio Tech: Reverse-Engineering Historical and Modern Binding Structures
with visiting artist Karen Hanmer
Saturday & Sunday, April 14-15; 9am-5pm
Binding experience required (see note in description)

Workshop will begin with a hands-on lecture on a set of approximately twenty models of various historical and modern binding structures, with a focus on methods of board attachment. Similarities between historical and modern structures will be stressed. A chart giving brief structural descriptions of all the binding models presented will be provided to aid students in continuing their study. Students will create five or six small models chosen from the larger set, as time permits. These models will remain unfinished so the sewing and board attachment are visible for future reference. A handout will be provided giving a rough outline of the steps to create the models made in class. Models may include: tacketing of a single signature into a limp wrapper, crossed structure, sewn boards binding, laced-on boards as a foundation for a traditional tight back leather binding with raised bands, split board binding, or double fan adhesive binding in German case.
Binding experience required; students should be comfortable sewing textblocks on a variety of supports.

Japan America Arts Forum
with Sheila Asato
Sunday, April 15; 2-4pm
All skill levels welcome

The Japan America Arts Forum is a collaboration between MCBA and the Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM), hosted and facilitated by Sheila McNellis Asato. Each month, people interested in Japanese visual art forms, related materials and processes gather at MCBA for learning, fellowship and hands-on fun. At each meeting, an artist who either practices a Japanese art forum or whose work is deeply influenced by the Japanese arts shares their work and then leads the group through a simple exercise which allows everyone to get a hands-on experience of the work for themselves. Topics range from katazome (resist dying on fabric) to suminagashi (paper marbling) to origami (paper folding) and much more.

For more details and monthly forum topics, visit Sheila's website, Monkey Bridge Arts. If you would like to share your work or know of an artist who would, email Sheila.

Case Portfolio
with Sue Bjerke
Wednesday, April 25; 6-9pm
Binding experience helpful

Do you need to tidy up all those stray papers? This portfolio makes a dandy housing either to transport or store your records, broadsides, photographs, etc. When placed on the shelf it looks like a case bound book. Open it up to find a securely closed case for your loose papers. The size we’ll make is approximately 9”x12” to accommodate normal size mailing &records. Once the structure is learned the size can be adjusted for a variety of needs. The structure will be heavy book board covered with book cloth & Chiyogami paper. It makes a great gift!

The Book Restructured: Wire Edge Binding
with visiting artist Daniel Kelm
Saturday & Sunday, April 28-29; 10am-5:30pm
All skill levels welcome

The range of books being produced today by artists is truly remarkable. Some diverge wildly from what we recognize as traditional book form, others play with slight variations. Often this break with tradition requires a reevaluation and restructuring of the traditional structures.

If you’re interested in creating a nontraditional book (e.g., a book with thick pages, or a book that is sculptural), the achievement of your goal may require the use of a material or movement not possible with conventional structures. Wire edge hinging grew out of just such a challenge. This binding configuration utilizes a thin metal wire along the hinging edge of each page. The metal wire is exposed at regular intervals creating knotting stations where thread attaches one page to the next. The result is a binding that opens exceptionally well, and gives you the option of producing unusual shapes. During the two days we will look at various wire-edge structures useful for books, enclosures, and articulated sculpture. You will produce both a simple codex, and an accordion model that forms a tetrahedron.
