Introduction to Design: Exploring Book Content through Design How does the layout of a page interact with the larger book of which it is a part? In this class, we'll design and fabricate hand-bound books using sketches, photos, and verbal/visual markings. Through a combination of examples, in-class exercises, and homework assignments, this class will give you opportunities to practice page design through exercises in observational drawing, typography, collage, and both digital and "analog" approaches to image building and manipulation. Keeping in mind the fundamental design principles of continuity, sequence, ratio, and color, we'll also examine and discuss design as it relates to the work of contemporary book artists. Students are expected to bring a journal to work in, and will be given a list of suggested supplies for work at home. Supplies for in-class exercises will be provided. Registration for this workshop has been closed.

Introduction to Coptic Binding Learn the classic Coptic stitch, in both two-needle and (if time allows) four needle techniques. No experience is required. Students will learn to cover boards with decorative papers to make a small blank journal that opens flats for ease in use; a second model with wooden covers will also be demonstrated and made if time permits. This historical binding was developed during the second to third century in Egypt. Adapting the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, a chain (or "link stitch") was used to bind the sections together. This binding technique was used throughout the Islamic world and Eastern Christendom (Europe), and is still used in some parts of Ethiopia today. $105 ($95 members) + $25 supply fee |

Concept & Form: Planning Your Book Project How does one develop hunches into content for an artist's book? This class will explore methods and tools for taking fledgling ideas for a concept or your interest in a specific book form as a starting place for the design, mocking-up, and planning of an artist's book by developing content and form in close relationship to each other. We will begin with a series of exercises for creating ideas or accessing your hunches and preoccupations and then focus on how to build them into content for a book. This class is ideal both for people who are quick with content, and want to focus on how to match that content to form in book planning, as well as for those who have been making book structures, and are interested in building their capacities for creating concepts and meaning in their books. You will leave the class with one to two fully developed mock-ups that have been edited and revised over the course of the class, and are ready to be taken to the next stage of making or editioning. The instructor will also provide written instructions on all exercises undertaken in class so you can use them again. $215 ($195 members) + $20 supply fee |

Remove and Repurpose: a Handmade Paper Workshop This experimental papermaking workshop operates around the notion of reducing, reusing and recycling. We will be making paper from our own stuff as opposed to acquiring materials from an outside source. Fibers can be anything ranging from garden trimmings to old prints or other works on paper, to old clothing! Clothing items may be woven (not knit) 100% cotton and/or linen -- no synthetic fibers. Working together to find exciting results from the range of things gathered to put in the beater, we'll experiment with textures, inclusions, and layering different pulps to produce unique sheets. Techniques covered in this class will include cooking vegetable fibers, beater operation, and preparing fibers for beating. If you don’t have enough fibers to create your own paper pulp, we'll pool resources and work collaboratively to pull some fabulous, naturally beautiful sheets of paper. $210 ($190 members) + $20 supply fee |

The Book Restructured: Wire Edge Binding The range of books being produced today by artists is truly remarkable. Some diverge wildly from what we recognize as traditional book form, others play with slight variations. Often this break with tradition requires a reevaluation and restructuring of the traditional structures. If you’re interested in creating a nontraditional book (e.g., a book with thick pages, or a book that is sculptural), the achievement of your goal may require the use of a material or movement not possible with conventional structures. Wire edge hinging grew out of just such a challenge. This binding configuration utilizes a thin metal wire along the hinging edge of each page. The metal wire is exposed at regular intervals creating knotting stations where thread attaches one page to the next. The result is a binding that opens exceptionally well, and gives you the option of producing unusual shapes. During the two days we will look at various wire-edge structures useful for books, enclosures, and articulated sculpture. You will produce both a simple codex, and an accordion model that forms a tetrahedron. $250 ($225 members) + $45 supply fee |
