FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Join MCBA staff to create fun and unique books, paper and printmaking projects. Learn about the techniques, processes and tools you are using while exploring the world of book arts. Workshops are designed for families with school-age children; please see descriptions for specific appropriate age ranges.

Children ages 9 and up may take workshops independently or with an adult. Each participant (children and adults) will receive materials; adult/child pairs may choose to work side-by-side or together. All supply fees are now included in workshop tuition.

Don't forget to also visit MCBA's Preschool Book Arts Series page, full of fall- and holiday-themed workshops where families can experience the book arts together! (for children ages 3-5)

Please make every effort to register AT LEAST one week in advance of any workshop. Decisions about whether to cancel workshops or add sections are typically made one week prior to the start of workshops.

Print Your Own Valentine's Day Cards

For families with children ages 6 and up

Who is your Valentine? Show them some love this year with a hand-made, printed Valentine's Day card using our Vandercook printing presses, then embellish with rubber stamps with Valentine's Day messages. Envelopes provided!

For families with children ages 2-10

Begin this Valentine’s Day class with the story My Love for You by Susan L. Roth. Then discover how to turn pieces of paper into a variety of pop-up and pocket valentines. Decorate them with all sorts of stamps, stickers, doilies, colors and even real valentine candies. Yum!

Join Ellen Ferrari for Saturday mornings of family book arts fun! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity and then dives into a book arts project. Workshops accommodate a range of developmental levels so that adults and children (or) adult/child teams may choose to work together or side-by-side. Each participant receives supplies to use during the workshop, but may choose to bring one set home if working with his or her partner. Ellen will provide older children with suggestions for extending their learning.

$30 ($27 members) per adult/child pair; $15 ($14) each additional participant

Paper Genius: Origami and Pop-Up Books

For families with children ages 6 and up

3-D movies, 3-D TVs, 3-D glasses... are you tired of "3-D" just being an illusion? Using the cutting and folding methods of the ancient Japanese art of Origami, you can experience actual 3-D by making 3 different pop-up books. Fold and cut and fold your way to your own original and handmade 3-D pop-up books!

Let's Play Cards!

For families with children ages 2-10

Listen to Play by Ann Morris and play lots of our card games and games with cards. Make rubber card game stamps and print several sets of them on our printing press. Use your cards to create your games -- Bingo, Go Fish, dominos, Concentration, Match-Up and more. Don’t forget to trade cards with your new friends, too!

Let's Eat! Writing and Bookmaking about Food
MCBA/Loft Combo Class for Young Writers
Saturday, March 24; 9am - 3pm
For students ages 9-11

Celebrate the art of food in this great combo class with Minnesota Center for Book Arts and The Loft Literary Center! Begin the day by exploring the world of printmaking and bookbinding at MCBA as you create a handmade screw-post journal to keep track of recipes, food memories and future food projects. After lunch, work with The Loft to fill your books with fabulous food stories -- fiction, nonfiction essays, memories, and recipes! Learn the basic craft techniques of fiction and nonfiction while writing about your favorite dishes, memorable meals, imaginary restaurants, fictitious food reality shows, and more. Fun and creative writing exercises will encourage you to think about all of the ways that food is involved in our lives -- both real and imagined.

Plant yourself down for Crockett Johnson’s garden story The Carrot Seed and its surprise ending. Make paper with cotton pulp and special tools, then decorate it with all sorts of seeds -- from big bean to little carrot. Plant the paper in your garden and wait for your own surprise ending! Dress for mess with water-safe shoes.

Eco-Papermaking: Handmade Recycled Paper

For families with children ages 6 and up

Turn newspaper into new-paper! Experience the process of papermaking from beating the pulp to pressing out your final sheets. Then use other papermaking tools to create uniquely designed paper that you can utilize for a variety of projects. Dress for mess with water-safe shoes.
