From binding students' writing projects to encouraging creative expression, book arts provide wonderful ways to reinforce learning. Workshop activities are geared to inspire classroom connections and applications, and teachers will create samples to keep for reference.

Teacher Workshops are also eligible for credit toward the Core or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Books for Science

For teachers of grades 1-12

There are numerous great non-traditional books that support student learning in the sciences: books to assist students in in their scientific observations and books that demonstrate student understanding. In this workshop participants will make up to five books that will support learning in the areas of life cycles, habitats, earth science, the solar system and more. The books include: a single sheet circle (donut) book, a pop-out book, a tunnel book, a traditional flag book, and a dos-a-dos sewn journal. Numerous samples will be on hand to demonstrate classroom connections.

STEM: Books for Science

STEM: A Portfolio of Pop-ups
with Jill S Weese
Monday, August 5; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 1-12

Pop-up books are as fun to make, as they are to read. Learn a variety of basic pop-up techniques using file folders to create sample pop-ups for easy future reference. Emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the engineering concepts behind the pop-up constructions and making classroom samples. Integration of text with imagery will be discussed; samples will be on hand to inspire classroom connections.

STEM: Thematic Pop-Out Books

Tuesday, August 6; 9am-noon
For teachers of grades 1-12

One of our most popular book structures for students, single sheet pop-out books is great for students as young as 1st grade and all through high school. Participants will learn how to adapt this structure for subject matter and student ability. Participants will explore paper engineering using pop-out books with an array of papers, looking at symmetry, creating layers of pop-outs, making templates and more. Such a simple, versatile, inexpensive book, this is a great structure to teach students how to design their own unique pop-out book. Samples will be on hand to inspire classroom connections.

STEM: Meander Books
with Jill S Weese
Tuesday, August 6; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 1-12

Another great single–sheet book with endless possibilities. Learn how students can change this single sheet of paper with a little folding and cutting into a 3 dimensional creature. With different folding and cutting it becomes a tiny book with seemingly endless meandering pages. A great book for students to examine the correlation between the number of folds, and where you cut determines the number and size of the page to the book. This is a fun engaging book that supports narratives, poems, illustrations, and information. Also great to integrate with watercolors and printing projects. Come explore the possibilities.

Books from Ancient Civilizations

For teachers of grades 2-12

Connect literacy, history, and geography with ancient book forms. Participants will make four different historical books: a slate book from ancient China, a Mayan Codex, a Palm Leaf book from ancient India, and an early Christian limp vellum journal using the tacket binding with faux leather cover. All different, all compelling, all surprisingly easy.

Exploring Japanese Book Arts
with Aki Shibata
Wednesday, August 7; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 3-12

Explore a different cultural perspective through the uniquely eastern traditions in book arts. Japan has a long history in paper, printing and bookbinding. In this workshop you will experience the Japanese traditions of sumi-nagashi (Japanese paper marbling), create an individual "chop" (signature stamp), fold an origami folder, and bind two distinct Japanese books. Handouts and discussion will emphasize classroom connections.

Collage: Beyond Cut and Paste

Monday, August 12th; 9am-noon
For teachers of grades 2-12

Take your students beyond cut & paste. Learn to maximize collage as an instructional tool to teach students how to express an idea visually stressing art elements and principles of design. Utilizing a structured process that stresses artful learning and fine motor skills, participants will create a sample collage that demonstrates a clear visual message. Sample collages will be sealed for long-term use in the classroom. Additional samples will be available to demonstrate connections to curricular subjects.

Gelatin Printing in the Classroom

Monday, August 12; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

No printing press? No problem! Gelatin printing is perfect for the classroom. Learn how to create gelatin printing plates. Experiment with monoprinting by painting right on the plate, printing with found objects, creating with ghost images, and more. There will be plenty of time and materials to explore and create samples for the classroom. Gelatin printing is versatile, easy, fun and safe for all ages.

Books for Biographies

For teachers of grades 2-12

Inspire your students with nontraditional books that will showcase their biographical writings. Participants will make four books particularly well suited to display images, time’s lines and text. The Portrait Pop-out book shows a pop-out face with pages to support writings, the Full-page Flag book stretches out to create a large picture with lots of room for text, the Four Section Pop-up presents phases of life, and an accordion with a timeline insert shows a life in context of other events in history. Four great books to inspire students to show their best.

Poetry-Inspired Books
with Jill S Weese
Tuesday, August 13; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

A snowflake book for winter snow poems, a Japanese receipt book for haikus. The structure of a book can support students’ poetic writing in dynamic ways. This workshop will focus on making book structures to support popular poetic forms, i.e. acrostics, cinquains, haikus, and more. Participants will make five different structural poem books that will be easy to replicate in the classroom.

Books of Native Americas

For teachers of grades K-12

With their strong oral traditions, the Native Cultures of the Americas have also created distinct book-like structures to record important events, mark the passage of time, and hold mnemonic records. Participants will make several book-like structures exemplary of the Native Cultures of the Americas and explore their use for visual art and documentation.

Exploring Woodland and Prairie Designs
with Jill S Weese
Wednesday, August 14; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 3-12

Native woodland and prairie designs are often seen in beadwork. In this workshop participants will explore the Native woodland and prairie designs through the contemporary art form of pulp painting. A sheet of mixed fiber paper will be your canvas; finely beaten and pigmented pulp your paint. Choose between free hand and a variety of tools and stencils that will be on hand for you to create your designs. Woodland and prairie designs will be reviewed with lots of pictures available for inspiration.

The Language of Books: Words and Pictures Speaking Together

Thursday, August 15; 9am-noon
For teachers of grades 2-12

Creating books where the words and pictures speak in unison teaches students to plan, sequence, make choices, and solve problems. Participants will walk through the story planning process utilizing story boards and page templates for four simple book structures that can easily be made in the classroom. Each will then create a finished sample book with words and pictures. The focus of this hands-on workshop is for participants to experience the joy and challenge of creating a book inside and out. A wide assortment of samples and materials will be on hand to fuel your creativity.

Preschool Book Arts
with Jill S Weese
Thursday, August 15; 1-4pm
For teachers of 3-5 year olds

Young children love to make books. And making books is a great opportunity to practice listening, develop fine motor skills, enhance math understanding, and support early literacy. Creating books from a single sheet of paper is a simple, yet powerful way to bring books to children. Participants will explore single sheet books by making several different books to use with children. In addition, participants will learn new ways to bind single sheets of paper. A wide assortment of samples and materials will be available to explore applications with young children. This is a hands-on workshop, where we will learn by doing.
