WINTER / SPRING 2012
Thematic Pop-Out Books One sheet of paper with a little folding and cutting can be transformed into a house, a city scape, a cave, a sea scene, a fish, or an airplane -- the possibilities are endless. Learn how to design a theme-based pop-out book and create templates that you can use with your students. Easy for younger students, these books are also great for older students as they create their own custom designs. Participants will make several different pop-out books that they can immediately apply in their classrooms. $50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee
Books of Native Americas With their strong oral traditions, the native cultures of the Americas have also created distinct book-like structures to record important events, mark the passage of time, and hold mnemonic records. Participants will make several book-like structures exemplary of Native American cultures and explore their use of visual art and documentation. $50 ($45 members) + $10 supply fee
Poetry-Inspired Books A snowflake book for winter snow poems... a Japanese receipt book for haikus... the structure of a book can support students' poetic writing in dynamic ways. This workshop will focus on making book structures to support popular poetic forms, i.e. acrostics, cinquains, haikus, and more. Participants will make five different structural poem books that will be easy to replicate in the classroom. Great ideas for National Poetry Month. $50 ($45 members) + $7 supply fee
Exploring Japanese Book Arts Explore a different cultural perspective through uniquely eastern traditions in book arts. Japan has a long history in paper, printing and bookbinding. In this workshop you will experience the Japanese tradition of suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling), create a personal "chop" (signature stamp), fold an origami pocket folder, and bind two distinct styles of Japanese books. Handouts and discussion will emphasize classroom connections. $50 ($45 members) + $10 supply fee
