Introduction to Book Arts: Single Sheet Books

Requiring no material preparation, these books are a great way to engage K-6 students while practicing fine motor skills, enhancing math understanding and supporting literacy. High school students can utilize single sheet construction ideas to explore design concepts that are applicable in zines and self-publishing.

Binding Student Writing

For teachers of grades K-12
Binding student writing is a wonderful way to reinforce learning. Explore a variety of simple binding techniques to ‘bind’ single sheets of student writing such as stick bindings, post bindings, whip stitches; pamphlet stitches and Japanese stab bindings. Participants will make five structures that they can easily use in their classrooms. Special emphasis will be on choosing binding techniques and materials that reflect the content of the book and are easily accessible for busy teachers. Samples will be on hand to inspire classroom connections.

Combining Words and Pictures

Learn how the structure of the page and the sequencing of pages can enhance students’ understanding and satisfaction. A little planning with mock-ups, storyboards, page grids, and/or a prescribed page template can help students create books where the words and pictures work together visually. In this hands-on workshop, you will walk through the planning process for designing a book and create a teaching sample that demonstrates the basic elements of page design. Applications for hand made books and word processing will be stressed.

Altered Books

Engage your middle school and high school students by transforming a discarded book into a work of art. Participants will explore ways to express ideas and communicate meaning in this popular multi-media art form of Altered Books by responding to and changing an existing book using a variety of book altering techniques: image transfers, rubber stamps, transparencies, cutting, folding, blocking out or adding color and more. All easily applied in the classroom. Examples will be available for inspiration.

Books In Boxes

Tunnel Books

Tunnel books come in a variety of shapes and sizes that will excite and challenge both younger students and the advanced. Tunnel books are also a fun way to explore how to use three-dimensional space to express a concept and support student writing. Participants will make a variety of tunnel books, starting with the simplest and progressing to the more complex. Integration of text with a three dimensional image will be discussed; samples will be on hand to inspire classroom connections.

Pressure Printing

Pressure printing uses layered cut paper to create multi-tone copies of an individual design. Print on our Vandercook printing presses and learn a hand roller technique appropriate for the classroom. Pressure printing is a great form to explore line, shape, texture and value.

Non-Traditional Books

Books need not be flat. Three-dimensional books support students’ writing in dynamic ways. Participants will make five different 3-D books: an accordion flag book, an 8-section accordion with pop-out inserts, a four-sided pop-up book, a petal fold book, and a meander tunnel book. Page layout will be highlighted with a focus on ways to integrate writing and imagery with the book structure. A variety of samples will be available to demonstrate the possibilities.
