From binding students’ writing projects to encouraging creative expression, book arts provide wonderful ways to reinforce learning. Workshop activities are geared to inspire classroom connections and applications, and teachers will create samples to keep for reference.

SUMMER 2010

Introduction to Book Arts: Single Sheet Books for the Classroom

Tuesday, July 27; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades K-12

Single sheet books are a simple yet powerful way to bring book arts to your classroom. These books support literacy with K-6 students and self-publishing with high school students. Participants will learn basic book concepts and make several different single sheet book structures that they can use in their classrooms.

$50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee

Pulp Painted Portraits
with Jill Weese
Tuesday, July 27; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades K-12

Create portraits using papermaking and the contemporary art form of pulp painting. A sheet of cotton paper will be your canvas; finely beaten and pigmented pulp your paint. Choose between free hand or a variety of tools and stencils that will be on hand for you to create your portraits.

$50 ($45 members) + $10 supply fee

Books of Native America
with Jill Weese
Wednesday, July 28; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades K-12

In addition to strong oral traditions, the native cultures of the Americas have also created distinct book-like structures to record important events, mark the passage of time, and hold mnemonic records. Participants will make several book-like structures exemplary of the native cultures and explore their use of visual art and documentation.

$50 ($45 members) + $10 supply fee

Ancient Books
with Jill Weese
Wednesday, July 28; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 3-12

Connect literacy and history with ancient book forms. Participants will make three books: a slate book from ancient China, an Ethiopian Coptic binding, and a faux limp vellum journal using the tacket binding from medieval Europe. Each book is bound differently. All are compelling and surprisingly easy.

$50 ($45 members) + $10 supply fee

Poetry-Inspired Books
with Jill Weese
Thursday, July 29; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

The structure of a book can support students’ poetic writing in dynamic ways. This workshop will focus on making book structures to support popular poetic forms, i.e. acrostics, cinquains, haikus, and more. Participants will make five different structural poem books that will be easy to replicate in the classroom.

Books for Biographies
with Jill Weese
Thursday, July 29; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

Inspire your students with nontraditional books to showcase their biographical writings. The focus of this workshop will be on book structures that dramatically display images, times lines and text. Participants will make four books great for student’s biographical and other non-fiction writings.

$50 ($45 members) + $7 supply fee

Collage: Beyond Cut & Paste
with Jill Weese
Tuesday, August 3; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades 3-12

Take your students beyond cut & paste. Learn to maximize collage as an instructional tool stressing art elements and principles of design. Participants will collage a composition book cover through a structured process that stresses artful learning. Collaged covers will be sealed using a technique suitable for the classroom.

Up-cycled Books
with Jill Weese
Tuesday, August 3; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades K-12

"Up-cycled" books are created by using discarded, obsolete materials and transforming them into unique, useable books. The focus of this workshop is using up-cycled books to encourage students to experiment and think creatively. Discarded materials will be the critical element available for teachers to make their sample up-cycled books.

$50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee

Pressure Printed Posters
with Jill Weese and Aki Shibata-Pliner
Wednesday, August 4; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

Make a statement. Learn how to make multi-tone "Pressure Print" posters using a printing plate made with layers of cut paper. Participants will print their posters using our Vandercook printing press and then add a message with wood type on a sign press. Several copies will be printed to share.

$50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee

A Book of Cultural Symbols
with Jill Weese and Aki Shibata-Pliner
Wednesday, August 4; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 2-12

Cultures all over the world use symbols to tell stories and express values. Participants will design symbols using flexible printing material to create ‘Books of Symbols’ with stamps and a printing press. This project supports students’ understanding of the use of symbols in art and an expression of cultural heritages.

$50 ($45 members) + $7 supply fee

Pop-up Books for Beginners
with Jill Weese
Thursday, August 5; 9am-12pm
For teachers of grades K-12

Pop-up books are as fun to make, as they are to read. Learn a variety of basic pop-up techniques using file folders to create sample pop-ups for easy future reference. Emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the concepts behind the pop-up constructions and making classroom samples.

$50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee

Advanced Pop-up Techniques for Teachers
with Jill Weese
Thursday, August 5; 1-4pm
For teachers of grades 3-12

Expand your knowledge of pop-up construction. Building upon the concepts in the morning class, participants will learn a variety of pop-up techniques using two pieces of paper. As with the morning class, emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the concepts behind the pop-up constructions and making classroom samples.

$50 ($45 members) + $5 supply fee
