PRUDY KOHLER

Prudy lives in San Francisco, where she teaches workshops at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

Polaroid Transfers
with Prudy Kohler
Saturday & Sunday, April 12-13; 10am-5pm
All skill levels welcome
$195 ($175 members) + $15 supply fee

Discover the magic of photo transfer processes. You will produce manipulated photographic images that stand alone as fine art pieces or can be easily reproduced to become part of an edition of artist books. Starting with your own film or digital photographic prints (which remain intact) or with prints made on site, you will transform them into instant prints. Then you will give them a painterly appearance as you transfer them to paper using a non-toxic, highly accessible process. Bring color or black and white prints, 35mm slides (higher contrast, saturated colors work well), and/or a few objects (leaves, flowers, etc.) to use for on-site prints. You will complete several finished pieces that can be further enhanced with hand coloring techniques, which will also be taught.

Special note: Even though Polaroid has recently decided to discontinue their instant films, including the film typically used for this photo transfer technique, Prudy has successfully changed over to a Fuji Film product which is (and should continue to be) commercially available. She will share this new product at the workshop.

Gatherings: A Portfolio of Framed Shadowboxes
with Nina Bagley
Saturday & Sunday, July 12-13; 10am-5pm
All skill levels welcome
$290 ($260 members) + $15 supply fee

Spend two days learning several different “framing” techniques to create shallow shadowboxes on vintage book covers from such everyday items as dowel rods, box tops, matchboxes, and mica. Create several art pieces that can be tucked within a ribboned “portfolio” that will hold your treasured artwork as a unified piece, lovely to place on a coffee table or shelf, or easily untied and disassembled so that your shadowboxes can be hung as individual designs on the wall. This will be a time of discussing various methods to work with dimensional items from nature, or relatively flat treasures gathered throughout the years, using wire, nails, brads, glue, and fabric to take your work “off the page”, to the next dimension. Techniques covered will include wire wrapping and the “Nina Knot”, clasp making, and mica work.
