VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOPS MCBA welcomes renowned artists from across the nation and abroad to share their unique skills in our studios. Paper as Narrative How can paper become an integral part of your book? This workshop will explore how to use paper as part of your book’s narrative, as opposed to just a substrate for text and image. We will explore pulp painting techniques, inclusions into handmade paper, and different techniques to add texture and color to dry paper (both commercial and handmade). $195 ($175 members) + $20 supply fee Register for this workshop
Experiments in Pressure Printing Pressure printing creates a textured printed surface that can be beautifully combined with the crisp lines and fields of color typical of letterpress. It is a simple process to learn, and can add a new dimension to printed work or be used on its own for quick image making. In this 2-day workshop students will learn the basics of pressure printing, including how to make a pressure plate, how different amounts of impression can affect the color and texture, and how to combine pressure printing with linoleum block printing. Students will also have time to experiment on their own and produce their own prints. $195 ($175 members) + $30 supply fee Register for this workshop
Printing a Multi-Color Wood Block (or, How to Print Like Gaylord Schanilec) A follow-up to this summer's wildly popular "Multiple Color Woodcuts and Wood Engravings", this workshop focuses on getting the most out of printmaking on the Vandercook press. Students will work intensely on the printing process, focusing on make-ready, inking, and registration. Though Schanilec's prior workshop is not a prerequisite for this workshop, first preference in registration will go to students who completed that workshop. $275 ($250 members) + $20 supply fee Register for this workshop
Magic Boxes This intriguing variation on the Jacob’s ladder makes a lidded box with divided compartments. The lid can be opened in two directions and different compartments are revealed depending on the opening direction chosen. The Jacob’s Ladder is a 2,000-year-old Chinese toy, it and its variations have many wonderful applications for contemporary artist bookmakers. Construction and operation of the Jacob’s ladder will be fully explained. Students will assemble a model of the magic box using a variety of patterned Japanese paper. $195 ($175 members) + $40 supply fee Register for this workshop
