Bookmaking for Preschoolers: Snow Play!

with Ellen Ferrari
Saturday, December 16; 10am–12pm CT

Kate Spohn’s Snow Play will get us ready to make a blizzard of books! Fold a round, fluffy snowball book while learning how to make a book from a folded piece of paper, called an “M-fold.” Build a sled book with runners, featuring the “stick-binding.” Construct a snow fort book that sparkles in the sun and features the “tunnel-fold” technique. Last, make an “M-fold”-on-a-stick book that looks like a mug of hot chocolate!

In this in-person workshop, preschoolers learn the parts of a book, work with tools like bone folders and glue sticks, and build fine motor skills by folding basic preschool book structures. They also grow their interest in books and visual arts and feel pride as they engage in artmaking in a book arts studio regularly accessed by working artists. Ellen designed this workshop to meet preschoolers where they are both developmentally and in their interests.

One registration includes one adult and one child. This workshop is ideal for children ages 2–6.
Caregiver tip: Sign up with your preschooler’s friend and caregiver!

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Adult/Child pair rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
*If either person in the pair (child or caregiver) is eligible for a scholarship, choose the scholarship option at registration.

Masks are strongly recommended for program participants working close to others in MCBA’s studios. See our Covid Safety Guidelines for more information.

Please note: Registration closes 12/11 at midnight (CT).
