Bradel Binding

with Parry Cadwallader
Saturday, January 27; 10am–4pm CT

The bradel binding is a simple and precise case-binding that provides ample design opportunities for beginners and experts alike. The easily repeatable steps allow for practice with intermediate binding techniques and serve as a great springboard to more advanced styles of binding. For this in-person workshop, participants will come away with a fully bound book quarter-bound (meaning the book is covered in two materials) in cloth and decorative paper.

Please come prepared with a sewn, but not glued, textblock and any decorative papers you may wish to use as covers or endpages. Participants can choose between two binding styles: a flat spine (the book with the gray spine, pictured above) and a rounded spine (the books with yellow and blue spines, pictured above). Participants who would like to bind a flat-spine book are encouraged to keep their textblocks thin by preparing a textblock with 4-10 signatures. Participants who would like to bind a rounded-spine book are encouraged to keep their textblocks thick by preparing a text block with 6 or more signatures.

Prior experience with rounding and backing books is helpful, but not required. Participants should already feel comfortable with the steps of making a cased-in book, but expertise is not required.

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Adult rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
