Candy Coptic Sketchbooks

with Savannah Bustillo
Saturday, August 26; 10am–5pm CT

Create your very own sketchbooks using upcycled candy wrappers for the covers! These sketchbooks are Coptic bindings and feature several signatures (or folded gatherings of pages) sewn together with a decorative link stitch exposed on the spine. Both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly sturdy, these sketchbooks have the advantage of being able to open completely flat so you can utilize the entire page to sketch. This binding is held together with the Coptic stitch sewing–no adhesives needed! This in-person workshop will provide an excellent foundation for anyone new to book arts, including basic binding tools and vocabulary. Participants will come away with basic skills in preparing paper (determining paper grain and cutting paper), the sewing process, and making hardcovers. Participants are welcome to bring in their own candy wrappers, or choose from a variety of provided wrappers.

Please note that binding is a technical process involving threading needles, sewing, and occasional measuring of small increments. All abilities are welcome to participate in whatever ways feel safe and comfortable.
