MCBA/Loft Combo Camps

Staying close to home this summer? Your imaginations can still venture far! We are partnering with the Loft Literary Center for a series of virtual camps that combine personal storytelling and bookmaking. The first half of each session will be spent turning your thoughts into words by writing your stories with professional authors at the Loft. Then, you’ll bring your stories to life with a one-of-a-kind book project, specifically tailored to your story and facilitated by professional book artists.

Write Like an Animal
with Carolyn Williams-Noren and Madeline Garcia
For youth ages 9–11
Monday–Friday, July 6–10; 1–4pm

This week, write like an animal! Develop and inhabit an animal character (real and researched, wild and imagined, or something in between). How does your body feel, how do you move, and how does your mind work? What do you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel? What happens to you? Write your story and make a handmade book to show it off.

This Book is a Monster
with Ellen Fee and Madeline Garcia
For youth ages 6–8
Monday–Friday, July 27–31; 9am–noon

What if a book is more than a book? What if a book is really…a monster? Kids will craft monsters of their own making while learning the basics of creative writing. We’ll bring our monsters to life as we shape them into real books filled with poems, stories, and illustrations. (Don’t worry—our monsters won’t be too scary for your 6-8 year olds!)

It’s All About Me
with Brenda Hudson and Madeline Garcia
For youth ages 9–11
Monday–Friday, August 3–7; 9am–noon

Want to get to know yourself better and create your very own “book of you?” Sign up for this class! We’ll use quirky writing prompts to help you tell your own story of who you are and what you think, feel, and dream. Then we’ll show you how to use paste, paint, and markers to create a beautiful book, with you as the main character!
