Enjoy a group reading of Dinosaur Versus the Library by Bob Shea, then make your own dinosaur book filled library! A TALL M-folded argentinosaurus. A BROAS pop-out triceratops. A FLYING flag pterodactyl. A pop-up tyrannosaurus WITH TEETH! And a DEEP tunnel habitat for all other prehistoric favorites. Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity before diving into book arts.

Valentines Day at MCBA = sweets and books. Enjoy a group reading of Pinky’s Sweet Tooth by Michele Malkin, then bind books using REAL sweets! Licorice whip stitch books. Candy stick binding books. Lollipop on a stick books. Snack-sized chocolate bar books. And, books with candy wrapper covers – after you eat the two candies! Mapping Yourself: A Loft/MCBA Writing and Book Making Class

This class is for aspiring illustrators and wordsmiths who like filling entire pages with color and life. You’ll walk away with your own book about YOU!

Hardcover Journal

For families with children ages 6-12

Join us for a family oriented Saturday afternoon of Bookmaking. We will cover book board, join covers with book tape, fold and glue a pocket, then secure pages into our journal using screw posts. This will be a fun adult and child(ren) book making experience!

Fishing Opener

For families with children ages 2 and up

Kevin Sherry’s book, I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean, is our fishing opener. After a group reading of Sherry’s book, make a lake with fish stamps and cookie cutters. Create creatures with letters like “F–I–S–H” and “E–E–L”, etc. Carve a big ocean thing block and print with brayers and barens. Use a roller stamp to create schools of fish. Finish with gyotaku – Japanese fish printing! Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity before diving into book arts.

Painting with Water!

Be amazed by Magic Paint Day by Shaheen Bilgrami during a group reading. Then, amaze yourself by painting ON WATER! Learn the art of marbling using specially prepared water, paint, and paper. Create lots of colorful patterns using everyday tools like forks, straws, and toothpicks. Begin projects here to finish when your marbled paper dries. Each workshop starts off with a story and game to warm up your creativity before diving into book arts.

Fairy Tales, Myths, Magic, and Books: A Loft/MCBA Writing and Book Making Class

For children ages 9-11

Explore the timeless territory of magic as you write your own myth-inspired fairy tale! Students will record the hair-raising adventures of a main character, who sets out on a magical journey to save a troubled world, and along the way, encounters menacing villians and mystical beings. Students will then bring the story to life in a pop-up book at MCBA.

Book Arts Intensive for Teens

Wednesdays: July 10, 17, 24, 31, August 7; 1-4pm
For teens 13-17 years old

Experiment and express yourself with book arts in this weeklong intensive for teens. Explore a new book arts process each day with supportive and engaging teaching artists. Students will marble paper, print on a printing press, make paper by hand, bind a hardcover sketchbook, and create an edition of zines.

Handmade Nature Journal

with MCBA Teaching Artists

Explore papermaking, printing, and binding while making a nature-themed journal. Make paper with natural fiber and seeds for the pages of your journal. Print the cover of your journal using a printing press. Then, bind your cover and pages to create a journal with pockets to draw and collect your favorite plants.

Explore the monarch butterfly’s four stages of transformation through book arts! Learn a new book arts process each day around the theme of transformation. Marble paper, print on a printing press, make an accordion book, create imagery with popups and cut-paper, and bind a hardcover sketchbook to fill with notes and drawings.
