Coptic Sketchbook

with Savannah Bustillo
Saturday, February 18; 10am–4pm CT

For this in-person workshop, create your own sketchbook using a Coptic binding. This decorative binding features exposed stitches at the spine where groups of pages, called signatures, are sewn together. Both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly sturdy, these sketchbooks have the advantage of being able to open completely flat so you can utilize the entire page to sketch. This binding is held together with the Coptic stitch sewing–no adhesives needed! This workshop will provide an excellent foundation for anyone new to book arts, including basic binding tools and vocabulary. Participants will come away with basic skills in preparing paper (determining paper grain and cutting paper), the sewing process, and making hardcovers. Participants are welcome to bring a specific paper for their book covers, like marbled paper, or folks can choose from a variety of decorative papers available.

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the “Adult” rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.

All in-person program participants are required to wear a mask while in MCBA’s studios. See our COVID Safety Guidelines for more information.

Please note: Registration closes 2/13 at midnight (CT).
