with Irene Chan
Saturday, January 22; 1–3:30pm CT
Join visiting artist Irene Chan for an in-person binding workshop centered on experimentation, inspiration, and play! Learn several multi-dimensional book structures, all created by cutting and folding without glue or sewing. Basic bookmaking skills and tools will be introduced before making a variety of models including single-sheet books, hidden books, tunnel books with an accordion, and simple covers.
Learn to fold accordions and see several variations. Make an infinite codex structure book, explore flexagons, and create a hardcover book with secret locks. Instruction will include additional examples of all structures as well as ideas for altering certain elements to create variations. Then, discover even more possibilities by combining structures. Come away with a collection of dynamic and multi-directional structures to make future sketchbooks and artists’ books.
Irene Chan is a multidisciplinary artist who works conceptually in print media, papermaking, installation, storytelling performance, and book arts on subjects of Taoism, personal immigrant narratives, and forgotten histories. She established Ch’An (ch’ ahn) Press through which she has self-published prints and 30 limited-edition artist books to date.
Irene Chan’s exhibition, Chiroptera, will be on display in the Outlook Gallery at Minnesota Center for Book Arts from January 20–March 20, 2022, viewable from the sidewalk along Washington Avenue and from inside The Shop at MCBA.
