with Jody Williams
Thursdays: June 4, 11, 18, 25, July 2, 9; 6–8pm
Participants will create books using a wide variety of materials for words and/or images. Starting with a simple 8-page book that folds out from a single sheet or paper, this workshop will continue with more complicated accordion and snake (or meander) books and adding pop-up features. In-class instructor demonstrations will be augmented with handouts, including templates and step-by-step instructions for making each structure. After making blank test samples, participants will learn how to convey a theme across the sequenced pages, using ideas for possible content suggested by the instructor. Samples of other book artists’ work will be provided along demonstrations of various ways to develop individual pages that will encourage participants to adapt these structures and continue working with them long after the workshop ends. The class will include a mix of the instructor’s group presentations and demonstrations with individual meetings.
Certificate: 12 hours, Category A or B
$216 (10% discount for MCBA members).
Participants are responsible for sourcing their own supplies from the materials list. Teaching artists will answer questions about materials in advance of the workshop start date.
Please note: Registration closes June 1 to allow enough time for participants to acquire supplies.
