Polymer plates allow printers to translate drawings, etchings, and photographs into letterpress prints. In this in-person letterpress workshop, learn how to mount, register, and print polymer plates on the Vandercook press. Instruction will focus on inking polymer plates, ideal paper options, and how to clean and store polymer plates.
Participants who have polymer plates are encouraged to bring them, along with any preferred paper to make test prints during the workshop. Example plates and paper will also be available.
Please note that a demonstration of the physical platemaking process using MCBA’s photopolymer platemaker will also take place during this workshop but participants will not create their own plates during the workshop (at this time, there are no local service bureaus creating film negatives for letterpress). Options for sending digital files to be made into polymer plates are discussed in Digital File Preparation for Letterpress, where participants learn how to digitally prepare artwork using Adobe Creative Suite.
Participation in Letterpress 1: Printing Basics or any other letterpress workshop is required before registering for this workshop.
Certificate: 3 hours, Category B or D

$33 for BIPOC participants (10% discount for MCBA members) + $10 materials fee
We are offering a reduced rate to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) participants to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom this does not apply, register at the rate listed first and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make reduced rates available.
All in-person program participants are required to be vaccinated, have received a booster dose, and wear a mask while in MCBA’s studios. Proof of vaccination must be received three days (72 hours) before the start of the workshop or enrollment is subject to cancellation with a full refund. See our COVID Safety Guidelines for more information.
Please note: Registration closes 10/21 at midnight (CT).
