Create an elegant multi-signature journal with a cover designed by you! First, learn (or review) basic bookbinding terminology and a helpful trick for determining the grain direction of paper. Then, make your own stencils and explore hand-stippling techniques that reflect your personality. After making the cover, we’ll fold the text pages that make up the journal’s text block and sew each of your four signatures individually into position on the cover. This book structure allows pages to open flat, which is ideal for making notes and sketches. The exposed stitching is both functional and aesthetic. Come away with a finished book and the skills need to make more.

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Adult rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
