Patterns are an essential technique of marbling. Designed for those who have experience marbling, this in-person workshop will focus on classical patterns such as nonpareil, chevron, and their variations. Through instruction and demonstrations, learn how a single traditional marbling pattern is a starting point for multiple variations. Experiment with patterns and begin to build your own technique and palette with guidance from a seasoned practitioner. Come away with marbled paper samples, a handout, and skills needed to participate in MCBA’s Marbling Labs.
Introduction to Marbling or other equivalent marbling experience is required before registering for this workshop. This workshop is a prerequisite for Paper Marbling: Patterns 2, also known as Extreme Marbling.

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the “Adult” rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
Masks are strongly recommended for program participants working close to others in MCBA’s studios. See our COVID Safety Guidelines for more information.
Please note: Registration closes 4/17 at midnight (CT).
