Papermaking & Paper Decoration Classes

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Please make every effort to register at least one week in advance of any class. Decisions about whether to cancel a class or add a section are typically made one week prior to the start of the class. Experience the magic of marbling! Learn the basic process of marbling with acrylics, including recipes for the various components of the process. Make four basic patterns (stones, moire/waved, git-gel, and nonpareil), explore seasonal color palettes, and take home your own marbled papers ready to use for books, gifts or decoration.

Learn how to make marbling tools! Build at least four combs/rakes for creating classic marbling patterns, custom-sized to your own personal tank sizes. Alternative tool-making methods will be discussed so additional custom tools may be developed to support your own pattern ideas. Please provide dimensions (length x width x height) of your marbling tank when registering for this workshop.

Suminagashi is a traditional form of paper marbling from Japan. The word Suminagashi literally translates to “floating ink.” Create lovely and unpredictable patterns using this ancient decorative technique.

This week-long paper marbling workshop using acrylic paints is designed for both beginning and more experienced marblers. Through instruction and demonstrations, you will learn or review the basic recipes for carrageenan, etc. and the classic patterns. Expand your marbling horizons by marbling on wooden items and a variety of formed paper masks. We will also include side-bar discussions on such things as tool and paint making, and marbling fabrics for those interested. This workshop offers time to build your technique and trouble-shoot with seasoned practitioners as well as develop your color palette and cultivate your marbling style.

Eco Printing is a form of natural dyeing where the colors from plant leaves and flowers are transferred to paper or fabric via steaming or boiling. This class will explore the many possibilities of color and textures found in the bounty of plants that the end of summer provides. Bring papers and textiles, and discover the possibilities to create unique prints and papers for use in handmade books, covers, and letterpress printing.

Paper Marbling: Special Effects

Introduction to Marbling or equivalent required

Go beyond patterns and explore a range of marbling techniques that create special effects! These techniques include: moiré and Spanish moiré, which make the marbled sheet look as if it’s folded or underwater; and over-marbling, which adds depth and complexity to the patterns. Methods for using white space and marbling on colored paper will also be explored.

Paste paper was invented by bookbinders in an effort to find an affordable method for embellishing bindings in-house. Play with color and pattern while creating decorative papers using paste, acrylic paints and several unique tools.
