MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Learn the essential elements of cartonnage, a French tradition of covering small containers with decorative materials, including basics of design and construction, use of various book boards, how to plan coverings, and measuring and cutting components by hand. Construct a tall six-sided box with a fitted lid closure and a side-hinge that, when opened, reveals stacked trays of the same shape.

This introductory intensive offers a thorough introduction to typesetting and presswork. Students will start with printing a collaborative project, and then design and print an edition of broadsides with text and a simple image of their choosing. Through the course of their projects, participants will learn the basics of Vandercook press operation, studio tools and procedures, typography, and a variety of printmaking techniques, focusing on creation of a beautiful edition of broadsides (prints), expertly printed. Perfect for beginners or those who wish to gain additional experience with presses, this class is a prerequisite for Letterpress II.

This week-long flurry of bookmaking will feature both paperback and hardcover blank books, assembled using a variety of folded and sewn binding styles: accordion and concertina books, Japanese "stab" binding and single- and multi-section stitches. Simple pamphlet bindings will provide a review of basic skills for measuring, folding, sewing, and gluing, followed by more challenging applications of those skills. Choosing and preparing materials, and finding suppliers will also be addressed. Extensive samples and discussion will provide ideas for images and objects that can be incorporated into artists' books, exploring appropriate structures for specific content, and methods for including text and image on the page.

Celebrate the summer solstice by folding an origami wreath in the shape and color of the sun. This origami modular is made up of sixteen individually folded pieces which are joined together without adhesive to make a circular wreath or mandala. No polymer? No problem! Try out some alternative techniques for image making on the Vandercook that don’t break the bank. Using common, cost-effective materials, students will experiment with pressure printing and collagraph to create a sample portfolio of prints to take home. Focus will be on layering materials to create a range of light and dark tones and texture. Discussion will include dos and don’ts on the Vandercook and tips for editioning.

Get beyond cute and create small, well-crafted containers to put those tiny things in order. Adapting materials and processes for working small has been the focus of the instructor’s own work for many years. These intricate skills, along with traditional boxmaking techniques, will be used to make four different little boxes out of bookbinders’ board and paper: a cube with a detachable lid, a cigar-style box with a hinged lid, a double match box, and a portfolio box. This course covers material selection, precise measurement, and preparation, as well as ideas for tiny things to put in boxes.

This class explores simple yet elegant methods of manipulating paper into three dimensional forms. With the assistance of prefabricated molds and handmade armatures, students produce traditional and non-traditional vessel forms. Low shrinkage fibers are used in conjunction with the following techniques: laminating, pulp pouring, pulp casting. Surfacing and finishing methods are addressed as well. These techniques can be applied to other sculptural forms.

Originating in the middle ages, it has come to mean any manual or handbook of instruction that provides vital information to the person who carries it. Experiment with metalworking on books by using simple methods and tools to produce a number of brass closures and embellishments based on historic examples (or your own free-wheeling experimentation!). Fashion clasps, bosses, corner protectors, and windows for labels and learn how to affix these pieces to a simple, wooden board binding that will be made in class. Instruction will cover low-tech surface decoration, texturing, as well as how to saw, file, form, and bend metal. Participants will leave with basic knowledge and skill to do simple metalworking that they can continue to explore and practice after the class.

Explore one of the first photographic processes -- the cyanotype! The cyanotype produces beautiful blue images and doesn’t require a darkroom or enlarger, just sunlight and water. Learn how to make digital photo-negatives, coat various papers for printing, and use the sun and UV exposure unit to expose images. Explore toner baths that will completely change the coloration of the blue prints in amazing ways. Participants will take home their new collection of cyanotypes and information to continue to build their skills in the process.

Where do you to start with your collection of books that need some repair? With this course we will begin with the basics. Learning about the materials and adhesives used in repair and some simple techniques such as cleaning paper and cloth, tear mends, end sheet repair and replacement, reattaching loose or torn out pages and repairs to corner and spines. Students will learn minor repairs and recognize their limits. Bring three books in need of repair to the first class (no leather).

Gothic black letter calligraphy looks impressively difficult, and is surprisingly one of the easier hands to learn. Using broad-edged dip pens and walnut ink, you will learn both the minuscule and majuscule letters (lower and upper case). We will explore some different visual weights possible by manipulating pen scale on blocks of text writing, and will look at the work of some contemporary gothic lettering artists.

If you are curious about making prints, this is a great place to start learning! This workshop will provide a foundation of printmaking history and technique, giving participants the opportunity to develop fundamental skills in linoleum and woodblock cuts. You'll learn to pull prints on both the Vandercook and etching press, and we'll also go over the ins and outs of hand-printing so that you can continue your printmaking adventures in your home studio. Over the course of the class, each participant will be able to experiment with these skills while developing an edition of images. No printmaking experience necessary.
