Feed your curiosity, stretch your creativity, and get your hands dirty!

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Patterns are an essential technique of marbling. Designed for those who have experience marbling, this workshop will focus on patterns, such as nonpareil, chevron, and their variations. Through instruction and demonstrations, learn how a single traditional marbling pattern is a starting point for multiple variations. Experiment with patterns and begin to build your technique and palette with guidance from a seasoned practitioner. Take home marbled paper samples as well as a handout.

Introduction to Coptic Binding

The Coptic binding was developed during the second to third centuries in Egypt, adapted from the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, creating a chain or link stitch to bind the sections together. Learn the classic Coptic stitch in two variations — the two-needle and the four-needle technique — and bind two small journals that open flat for ease in use, one with decorative paper covers and one with wooden covers.

Knife Sharpening for Leather Pairing and Intro to Binding (or equivalent) are required.

This class will introduce using leather in bindings. Students will sew a blank book on sunken cords with a tube spine lining to make a smooth rounded back to this binding. The binding will be finished with a leather covered spine and corners and hand marbled paper. The class will concentrate on the tools and techniques used with leather binding, including sharpening knives, paring leather and adhesives.

MCBA’s two beautiful iron hand presses are examples of an important part of printing history. Hand presses are also extremely versatile tools for artists, still in daily use in studios around the world. Print from metal and wood type as well as woodblocks and half tones, and explore possibilities for monoprints and multicolor block printing. Then design your own piece to print as an edition.

From the first page to the last, there are a plethora of decisions to be made when designing a book. How will you draw the viewer into your story? Whether visual or typographic, this will be your challenge. This class will introduce you to design basics and explore the principles and elements of art. Great for beginners

Get beyond "cute," and create small, well-crafted containers to put those tiny things in order. Adapting materials and processes for working small has been the focus of the instructor’s own work for many years. These intricate skills, along with traditional boxmaking techniques, will be used to make four different little boxes out of bookbinders’ board and paper: a cube with a detachable lid, a cigar-style box with a hinged lid, a double match box, and a portfolio box. This course covers material selection, precise measurement, and preparation, as well as ideas for tiny things to put in boxes.

This project-driven course will focus on the methods, techniques and procedures employed in screen printing an edition of prints with multiple layers. It will provide students with the fundamental knowledge and necessary skills to confidently explore and experiment within the medium of silkscreen, including registration methods and techniques, creating analog and digital color separations and artwork for films, mixing inks, printing effectively, and planning for successful screen prints with all of the above. Students will also have the option to make simple prints on apparel. Each student will create at least one edition of prints over the course of the class and will have the opportunity to participate in a group print exchange.

Modern cartonnage grows out of the long-standing French tradition of covering small containers with decorative materials, and offers a great use for your marbled papers. Make a box in the Art Deco style: an upright disc with a lid. Review the essential elements of cartonnage design and construction using various boards, as well as the ins and outs of measuring, cutting, and applying decorative papers, using a plinth, making curved sides, and making variations on design and size.

Create a replica of a simple but beautiful early binding. The Nag Hammadi binding takes its name from the Egyptian city where these ancient books were discovered in 1945. Sealed in buried jars, they date from the 4th and 5th centuries and contain early Gnostic religious texts. Like the originals, these models will be made from leather and papyrus, but with a textblock of 21st century paper. The pages are easily replaceable, making for a book you can use over and over again. Leather covers will be decorated using simple tooling techniques.
