Beyond Book Covers: Considering Containers

Beyond Book Covers: Considering Containers
with Jody Williams
Free Roundtable Artist’s Talk Friday, February 20; 7pm
Workshop Saturday and Sunday, February 21–22; 10am–4pm
All skill levels welcome

This workshop will focus on the box as a contemporary artists’ book format. Through a survey of historical and contemporary boxes, combined with hands-on skill-building exercises, participants will gain a working knowledge of basic box construction and an understanding of the box as a conceptual art form. A step-by-step, hands-on demonstration of basic boxmaking will provide an experience of constructing containers out of materials used in the book arts context. The instructor will give a presentation on the history of boxes beginning with containers for Egyptian game pieces through 15th century Wunderkammern, the precursors to museums. Students will brainstorm and share ideas about creating containers for specific books or a small collection of objects from home.

In celebration of our 30th Anniversary, MCBA hosts This is Book Art, a series of free presentations and reduced price workshops throughout 2015, offering opportunities for interaction, discussion and skill-building with leaders in the field. Normally $290 or more, these workshops are discounted thanks to special support from the Minnesota State Arts Board. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners to advanced.

Workshop participants also receive free admission to the Book Art Biennial Symposium (July 25-26, 2015) and an opportunity to share their artwork as part of our community exhibition, Parts of a Whole III (August through October 2015). Visit our This is Book Art page for more details on the entire series. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
