Feed your curiosity, stretch your creativity, and get your hands dirty!

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Please make every effort to register at least one week in advance of any class. Decisions about whether to cancel a class or add a section are typically made one week prior to the start of the class. Create your own fireworks this Fourth of July with folded paper! This firework-style modular is made of twelve origami pieces linked without adhesive. The end result is a modular that can be manipulated an infinite number of times into infinite forms. Origami fireworks are addicting to fold and play with!

Introduction to Binding or equivalent required

Originating in Denmark during WWII, these historic bindings made use of small scraps of leather, exposing just a millimeter of leather, past the joint areas and at the board corners. In this four evening course, practice your leather paring skills and create two beautiful sewn bindings, using a decorative paper as the covering material. A step up from a paper case binding, this course is great for those wanting an introduction to leather work.

Handmade Paper in Three-Dimensions

This class explores simple yet elegant methods of manipulating paper into three dimensional forms. With the assistance of prefabricated molds and handmade armatures, students produce traditional and non-traditional vessel forms. Low shrinkage fibers are used in conjunction with the following techniques: laminating, pulp pouring, pulp casting. Surfacing and finishing methods are addressed as well. These techniques can be applied to other sculptural forms.

Tessellations are fun repeating designs used to create beautiful patterns. Unravel the mystery of tessellations while focusing on the basic design principal of repetition. Through a series of paper cutting exercises, learn how to make a basic pattern and then magically transform it into a tessellation through repetition, creating beautiful paper mosaics, borders and more!

Polymer Photogravure

Experience the somewhat challenging but highly satisfying process of Polymer Photogravure in this introductory workshop. Learn how to create digital positives, etch plates with a UV exposure unit, and print images using an etching press. Instruction will cover the basics of image selection and criteria for choosing paper. Materials will be provided for each student to complete the class with a small edition of prints. Photoshop, photography and printmaking experience is helpful but not required.

Intro to Marbling or equivalent experience required; Patterns I helpful but not required

This class is for those who want to be introduced to the most challenging comb techniques for making marbled patterns. These patterns build on the patterns introduced in the Patterns I workshop and complete the description of the most common, traditional marbling patterns. The challenges revolve around how the combs are moved through the tank and learning to develop an eye for the pattern while combing it. During this workshop we will also explore developing one’s own unique patterns.

Where do you to start with your collection of books that need some repair? With this course we will start with the basics. Learning about the materials and adhesives used in repair and some techniques; such as cleaning paper and cloth, tear mends, end sheet repair and replacement, reattaching loose or torn out pages and repairs to corner and spines. Students will learn minor repairs and recognize their limits. Bring three books in need of repair to the first class (no leather).

This two-day workshop, led by Paul Moxon, is a lecture/demo developed for artist/printers to guide them in the proper care and adjustment of Vandercook presses. (This information is applicable to other brands such as Asbern, Challenge, Reprex). Participants need not be mechanically inclined, but should have some familiarity with proof presses, and may handle tools and press parts.

This is a continuation of the pointed pen Copperplate class. Here is a chance to review the minuscule letters and spend more time on the majuscules. On the second night, we will gently break the rules and learn how to make the lettering contemporary and fun while writing in color. Bring your tools from Pointed Pen I.
