MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Some letterpress experience required.

Stay out of the darkroom and keep your hand in the process by creating photopolymer plates from cut paper and sunlight. Practice papercutting and a method for creating photopolymer plates. Then, create a small edition of prints while bringing cut paper back into the process by incorporating chine collé into your prints.

Copperplate is a script style of calligraphy that gets its unique look from the use of a flexible, pointed pen nib that allows variations in thickness by writing with pressure on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. Beginning in the eighteenth century, it filled the need for a business correspondence script until the arrival of the typewriter. This small, elegant, fun-to-write hand will be used to letter a short greeting.

Pressure print, photopolymer, and relief comprise some of the most essential imagemaking techniques used when printing on a Vandercook Press. Explore variations and push the boundaries of each process in depth—including short introductions to each approach as needed. The Vandercook Press will be considered as a drawing tool, and participants will be encouraged to print with an attitude of considered chaos. The print process will help direct the evolution of the images. Participants will leave with a lot of information and many samples of variations on each technique. Experimentation with and adaptations of traditional letterpress are a main focus of the instructor’s work and teaching; a period of class time will be open for perusing printing samples.

The Coptic binding is one of the oldest styles of codex binding. Historically, wooden covers were used and often decorated in elaborate ways, making chip carving an ideal technique to enhance the Coptic binding’s simple structure. Learn the basics of chip carving to embellish wooden covers, then learn the two-needle Coptic stitch to bind the book. Supply fee includes a basic carving kit to keep, a practice board, and an extra set of wood covers to make another book at home.

This week-long flurry of bookmaking will feature both paperback and hardcover blank books, assembled using a variety of folded and sewn binding styles: accordion and concertina books, Japanese "stab" bindings and single- and multi-section stitches. Simple pamphlet bindings will provide a review of basic skills for measuring, folding, sewing, and gluing, followed by more challenging applications of those skills. Choosing and preparing materials, and finding suppliers will also be addressed. Extensive samples and discussion will provide ideas for images and objects that can be incorporated into artists' books, exploring appropriate structures for specific content, and methods for including text and image on the page.

Originating in Denmark during WWII, these historic bindings made use of small scraps of leather, exposing just a millimeter of leather, past the joint areas and at the board corners. This class explores simple yet elegant methods of manipulating paper into three dimensional forms. With the assistance of prefabricated molds and handmade armatures, students produce traditional and non-traditional vessel forms. Low shrinkage fibers are used in conjunction with the following techniques: laminating, pulp pouring, pulp casting. Surfacing and finishing methods are addressed as well. These techniques can be applied to other sculptural forms.

This class is for those who want to be introduced to the most challenging comb techniques for making marbled patterns. These patterns build on the patterns introduced in the Patterns I workshop and complete the description of the most common, traditional marbling patterns. The challenges revolve around how the combs are moved through the tank and learning to develop an eye for the pattern while combing it. During this workshop we will also explore developing one’s own unique patterns.

Where do you to start with your collection of books that need some repair? With this course we will start with the basics. Learning about the materials and adhesives used in repair and some techniques; such as cleaning paper and cloth, tear mends, end sheet repair and replacement, reattaching loose or torn out pages and repairs to corner and spines. Students will learn minor repairs and recognize their limits. Bring three books in need of repair to the first class (no leather).
