Feed your curiosity, stretch your creativity, and get your hands dirty!

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Suminagashi is a traditional form of paper marbling from Japan. The word Suminagashi literally translates to “floating ink.” Create lovely and unpredictable patterns using this ancient decorative technique.

The art of engraving in endgrain hardwood to create prints, cards, broadsides, and book illustrations is enjoying a renaissance. Discover the versatility of this medium for rendering fine detail that other relief printing methods cannot provide. Learn the use of traditional tools, characteristics of various printing inks and papers, and techniques for printing on both the Vandercook proofing press and the iron hand press. Many examples of engravers’ art from the nineteenth century to the present will be available for participants to peruse.

French artist and proprietor of Éditions de la Margeride, Robert Lobet, will share his approach to book design and imagemaking. Explore simple, alternative printmaking techniques that encourage spontaneity at the press. Learn a method of printing on the etching press that combines monotype with embossing techniques. Experiment with the instructor’s invented technique of peeling off layers of laminated board to create a dimensional print. Ink and watercolor will be used to enhance the work. All participants will create a portfolio of visual images.

Before there was type, there was hand lettering. In this introductory calligraphy class, learn the basics of broad-edged pen lettering by exploring the early Uncial (un-shul) hand, a formal book script used in the 4th and 5th centuries, using a dip pen and walnut ink. Finish the class by working with some alternative mark making tools to add contrast to a page of text.

Use sample boards covered in leather, cloth, and paper to practice on as you explore the various materials and techniques. Discussion will cover the advantages foil can offer traditional leaf tooling. Participants are welcome to bring a leather bound book to work on in class.

A continuation of Advanced Binding I, this workshop further explores fine leather binding by creating a full leather bound book. Sew a blank book on raised flax cords that are laced into the cover boards. Then, learn a method for covering the binding in full goatskin leather. Participants will build their technique in leather paring and grow their hand skills in fine leather binding.

In MCBA's darkroom and screen printing studio, participants will learn the basics of design, screen exposure, ink and multi-color printing. Design demos will include hand-drawn images, photocopies, and hand-cut stencils. Printing demos will include registration techniques and successful printing tips for paper, plywood, fabric and apparel. This workshop is perfect for those who are new to the process or for those who want to continue building their skills in screen printing.

Use cartonnage techniques to make this charming faceted-side box of book board covered in Chiyogami or marbled papers. Modern cartonnage grows out of the long standing French tradition of covering small utility containers with various decorative materials and offers a great use for your marbled papers. Learn the basics of design and construction using various boards, as well as the ins and outs of measuring, cutting, and applying decorative papers. Once learned, the size can be adjusted for many uses. Each structure is unique and will make a great gift. All components will be hand cut in class.

This structure is based on German paper case bindings, from the 17th and 18th centuries, which were created as a quick and affordable method for making hard cover books. To create this binding, decorative paper is laminated to thin board to create a stiff paper cover. The book pages are sewn in signatures and onto cords. In this workshop, create one paper case binding and learn how to measure and prepare paper and board for a second book to make at home.

Go beyond patterns and explore a range of marbling techniques that create special effects! These techniques include: moire and Spanish moire, which make the marbled sheet look as if it’s folded or underwater; Italian vein marbling, a method of obtaining very, very fine veins of color; over-marbling which adds depth and complexity to the patterns. Methods for using white space, creating pictures on patterns, and marbling on colored paper will also be explored.

Learn a new way to reuse and recycle with this class that will cover the basics of papermaking and focus on how to make paper out of old clothing items you no longer wear. Students will learn fiber preparation, basic use of a Valley Beater, sheet formation and pressing and drying techniques. This weekend workshop will encourage students to practice their sheet forming to make a small collection of beautifully formed, even sheets that will be perfect for writing and other art techniques once they dry.
