Feed your curiosity, stretch your creativity, and get your hands dirty!

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

All skill levels welcome

Learn a new way to reuse and recycle with this class that will cover the basics of papermaking and focus on how to make paper out of old clothing items you no longer wear. Students will learn fiber preparation, basic use of a Valley Beater, sheet formation and pressing and drying techniques. This weekend workshop will encourage students to practice their sheet forming to make a small collection of beautifully formed, even sheets that will be perfect for writing and other art techniques once they dry.

Experience the somewhat challenging but highly satisfying process of polymer photogravure in this introductory workshop. Learn how to create digital positives, etch plates with a UV exposure unit, and print images using an etching press. Instruction will cover the basics of image selection and criteria for choosing paper. Materials will be provided for each student to complete the class with a small edition of prints. Photoshop, photography, and printmaking experience is helpful but not required.

Develop an understanding of design that will inform and enrich the decisions you make in your artwork. The workshop begins by covering basic drawing techniques (no experience necessary). Each design principle (contrast, balance, pattern, emphasis) will be explored each week through lively drawing demonstrations and lectures, followed by a series of small projects that both reinforce drawing skills and explore the design principle in depth. Students will build an understanding of each design principle with direction from the instructor and feedback from classmates.

This course will focus on the basics of screen printing, providing students with the fundamental knowledge necessary to explore and experiment on their own. In MCBA's darkroom and screen printing studio, students will learn the basics of design, screen exposure, ink and multi-color printing. Design demos will include hand-drawn images, photocopies, and hand-cut stencils. Printing demos will include registration techniques and successful printing tips for paper, plywood, fabric and apparel. The class will culminate with a group critique of work produced by each during the course as well as a class print exchange.

Learn basic origami techniques while folding colored paper into symmetrical quilt block patterns. Practice creating various patterns and shapes by modifying the folds. Learn to practice editorial design work using paper folding, a technique often under-utilized in book design. A variety of unique Chinese papers, provided by the instructor, will be used for each participant to create a 64-page folded book. The finished hand-sewn book will engage all five senses. Though geared towards designers and book artists, this class may be of interest to anyone looking to grow their skills in design and content development.

In this workshop, participants will learn a variety of monoprinting techniques to create painterly illustrations inspired by fairy tales. After printing a unique suite of illustrations, participants will set the passage inspiring their imagery in metal type, and combine the text with their illustrations to create a suite of prints to exchange with classmates. The prints will then be collated and bound into books.

Copperplate is a script style of calligraphy that gets its unique look from the use of a flexible, pointed pen nib that allows variations in thickness by writing with pressure on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. Beginning in the 18th century, it filled the need for a business correspondence script until the arrival of the typewriter. This small, elegant, fun-to-write hand will be used to letter a personal greeting.

The versatile Coptic binding is essential for any binder’s repertoire. This workshop is for those who already know how to wrap covers and fold signatures. The two-needle and four-needle binding will be executed on two books with prepared covers and quires provided to allow for plenty of time to learn the stitch and its options. On the second day we will make a slipcase using book board lined with paper and covered with book cloth. Bring a hardcover book that you will make a slipcase for in class.

Invented in the 19th century by French binder Alexis Bradel, this binding was meant to be a temporary binding. Refined by others, it developed into a permanent binding sturdier than a case binding. This versatile structure offers the possibility of introducing contrasting materials in one book.
