MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Explore ideas for mini memoirs, “how to” zines, and small books that carry poetic or philosophical questions or threads. Start by looking through samples, then make two or three simple books that are either complete at the end of class or will serve as sturdy drafts for future work. Techniques taught are with inexpensive tools and materials that you can later use to make small books on a kitchen table or desk.

Learn techniques to create dimension and movement in your work! We’ll start with a series of exercises to understand fundamental paper engineering principles. As we explore a variety of folds, you’ll learn to make basic pop-up structures using free-hand shapes and templates that can be used to make more complicated designs. Then learn how to incorporate movables such as tabs, paper rivets, and spinners. There will be an emphasis on understanding fold theory as well as guided time to explore an independent project.

Based on a 17th century book structure, this innovative glued binding is an ideal way to turn your artwork into a book format. It requires no sewing so there is no thread to interfere with any image or text that crosses through the fold of the page. Each folded two-page spread can be a print, painting or digital image that is glued to the back of the following page, producing a lightweight and flexible book. Students may bring decorative paper for end sheets and covers.

Cartonnage or boxmaking experience helpful but not required

Make a handy three-section desktop caddy to keep pens, paper clips, and note paper at your fingertips, as well as making a pedestal caddy for your cell phone. Students will learn the basics of cartonnage design and construction using various boards, as well as the ins and outs of measuring, cutting, and applying decorative papers. Students will also learn simple variations on the basic structure that can develop one simple form into a variety of shapes and sizes. All components will be hand cut in class. This set makes a great gift.

Modern cartonnage grows out of the long standing French tradition of covering small utility containers with various decorative materials and offers a great use for marbled papers.

Learn a new way to reuse and recycle with this class that will cover the basics of papermaking and focus on how to make paper out of old clothing items you no longer wear. Students will learn fiber preparation, basic use of a Valley Beater, sheet formation and pressing and drying techniques. This weekend workshop will encourage students to practice their sheet forming to make a small collection of beautifully formed, even sheets that will be perfect for writing and other art techniques once they dry.

Color is often one of the most intimidating elements of art, but it can also be one of the most powerful modes of visual expression. In this one-day class, we will discuss color theory, practice efficient and precise methods of mixing rubber-based ink according to the Pantone Matching System, and experiment with printing colors on the page. Working as a group, we will produce a small book of samples in which to make notes and to use as a reference for future projects.

Focus on the basics of screen printing and gain the fundamental knowledge necessary to explore and experiment on your own. In MCBA's darkroom and screen printing studio, participants will learn the basics of design, screen exposure, ink and multi-color printing. Design demos will include hand-drawn images, photocopies, and hand-cut stencils. Printing demos will include registration techniques, ink mixing, and successful printing tips for paper, fabric, and apparel. This workshop is perfect for those who are new to the process or for those who want to continue building their skills in screen printing.

From etchings to photographs, learn how to achieve optimal results in translating a variety of imagery into photopolymer plates for letterpress. Explore a variety of options for digitally preparing your imagery for letterpress printing, including scanning and converting grayscale images to bitmaps, alternative methods of halftoning such as diffusion dithers, and strategies for color separations. While primarily a computer class, participants will get an opportunity to image film and make a 5 x 7 inch polymer plate.

Add something new to your long stitch repertoire: a drilled wooden spine. Use hardwoods from Africa and South America in a rainbow of colors: canarywood, rosewood, bloodwood, and purpleheart are among the possibilities. Cover weight papers will be selected to complement your wood spine, which will be drilled in class from a template. Long stitch sewing through the wood spine will result in stunning contrasts. Optional embellishment of top-stitching on the book covers will be discussed and demonstrated. The final book will be a chunky 7 x 6 inches (approximately), great for sketching or journals.
