Papermaking Intensive: Summer Blues - Hand Papermaking and Indigo Dye

Papermaking Intensive: Summer Blues -- Hand Papermaking and Indigo Dye
with Mary Hark
Monday through Friday, June 9-13; 10am-2pm
All skill levels welcome

Indigo is a color that is valued by cultures all over the world. It is a dye that offers a remarkable range – from a chalky sky blue to a deep, ruddy, blue-black. It is a process that can sing with crisp pattern, carry rivers of fluid marks, or produce a stunning, field of thick, rich, darkness. Starting with a thorough introduction to papermaking, workshop participants will begin by producing papers using fibers that are strong enough to hold up when immersed in the indigo vat. Exploring the range of surface qualities possible with linen, flax, abaca and Asian fibers, workshop participants will fine tune their understanding of the Hollander Beater and produce a portfolio of papers with an exciting range of tactile surfaces. Once a good amount of paper has been produced, the use of an indigo vat will be introduced. Students will use both traditional and experimental ways of making marks and coloring handmade paper. Images of contemporary and traditional indigo dye work, and many samples of dyed papers and textiles will be shared. Students will leave this workshop with a solid understanding of papermaking fibers, using the Hollander Beater, forming high quality sheets, running a papermaking studio, and setting up and using an indigo vat.
