MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Patterns are an essential technique of marbling. Designed for those who have experience marbling, this workshop will focus on patterns, such as nonpareil, chevron, and their variations. Through instruction and demonstrations, learn how a single traditional marbling pattern is a starting point for multiple variations. Experiment with patterns and begin to build your technique and palette with guidance from a seasoned practitioner. Take home marbled paper samples as well as a handout. This workshop is a prerequisite for Patterns II.

With the new technology of printing spreading across Europe in the 16th century there was a need for a new simpler binding style. Sewn-on tawed leather thongs with sewn endbands with a laced-on folded paper cover: this binding filled the need. Using handmade paper students will construct this early paperback. Variations using different materials will be discussed along with the contemporary uses of this binding structure.

Experience the exciting scope of contemporary book arts as an agent of communication. This workshop will focus on exploring various ways to have a public voice through your work using simple folded book structures and relief printing by hand. With a paste mixture and paint we will use combs, brushes, graining tools and found object to produce intricate designs. Create a replica of a simple but beautiful early binding. The Nag Hammadi binding takes its name from the Egyptian city where these ancient books were discovered in 1945. Sealed in buried jars, they date from the 4th and 5th centuries and contain early Gnostic religious texts. Like the originals, these models will be made from leather and papyrus, but with a textblock of 21st century paper. The pages are easily replaceable, making for a book you can use over and over again. Leather covers will be decorated using simple tooling techniques.

This project-driven course will focus on the methods, techniques, and procedures employed in screen printing an edition of prints with multiple layers. Gain fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to confidently explore and experiment within the medium of screen printing, including registration methods and techniques, creating analog and digital color separations and artwork for films, mixing inks, printing effectively, and planning for successful screen prints with all of the above. Each participant will create at least one edition of prints over the course of the class and will have the opportunity to participate in a group print exchange. Participants will also have the option to make simple prints on apparel.

Based on early methods of binding manuscript books in about the 4th century, the long stitch binding technique was commonly used for record books of all sorts throughout the middle ages. Here, the long stitch fastens quires to a sturdy leather covering, resulting in a durable structure that is fun to make and a pleasure to use. This book lays flat for ease of use in writing or drawing, and has a closure secured by a leather tab incorporated in the long stitch on the spine.

The Coptic binding was developed during the second to third century in Egypt, adapted from the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, creating a chain or link stitch to bind the sections together. Learn the classic two-needle Coptic stitch and bind a small journal with vibrant hardwood covers that opens flat for ease in use. Use hardwood covers from Africa and South America in a rainbow of colors: canarywood, rosewood, bloodwood, and purpleheart. All of the wood is used as it naturally occurs; no coloring or dyes are used.

Learn a new way to reuse and recycle with this class that will cover the basics of papermaking and focus on how to make paper out of old clothing items you no longer wear. Students will learn fiber preparation, basic use of a Valley Beater, sheet formation and pressing and drying techniques. This weekend workshop will encourage students to practice their sheet forming to make a small collection of beautifully formed, even sheets that will be perfect for writing and other art techniques once they dry.

Most of the capital letters we use today have a common ancestry – the carved monumental letters found in ancient Rome. We will study the classic proportions with a monoline tool, and then see how that transfers to using a broad-edged pen to letter foundational and italic caps.

Open Studio

MCBA’s Open Studio programming is designed to provide artists with regular, low-cost access to our studios and equipment outside of workshops and classes. Work on your own projects in our well-equipped bindery, paper studios, print studio or composition room and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie of fellow artists. Studio Monitors are available to answer questions or help with equipment, but participants must have adequate training to work independently in the area(s) they wish to utilize. Open Studio sessions are not eligible for Certificate credit.
