Feed your curiosity, stretch your creativity, and get your hands dirty!

MCBA offers classes for adults on a wide variety of topics and at all skill levels, from total beginner to seasoned expert. Supply fees cover workshop materials and expendable studio supplies such as solvents, rags, waste disposal, safety supplies and small tools. Sales tax is included in the total.

Adult classes are eligible for credit toward MCBA’s Core Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Book Arts; more information is available on the Certificate Programs page.

Please make every effort to register at least one week in advance of any class. Decisions about whether to cancel a class or add a section are typically made one week prior to the start of the class. Experience the magic of marbling! Learn the basic process of marbling with acrylics, including recipes for the various components of the process. Make four basic patterns (stones, moire/waved, git-gel, and nonpareil), explore seasonal color palettes, and take home your own marbled papers ready to use for books, gifts or decoration.

Foils should not be limited to just stamping machines and in this workshop we will cover to both traditional and alternative decorative techniques using hand tools. We will use the different type of foils, real 23kt gold, metallic and pigmented colors, on leather, cloth and paper to show the advantages foil can have over the traditional gold leaf tooling. This class will helpful to learn to use the tools, jigs and patterns used in decorative tooling, Participants can bring a binding that is covered in leather or cloth to work on.

Folded Secrets: Chinese Thread Book Version III

Originally made of fabric, the thread book was used as a sewing kit to carry thread, needles, and scraps of material. The thread book is unique, fun and useful, with many compartments in which to store small treasures. Learn how to fold this book and use it as a fancy card, a place to keep your favorite paper ephemera (samples of special paper or color swatches), as an insert on an altered book, or whatever you dream up. Feel free to bring your own lightweight papers.

Suminagashi is a traditional form of paper marbling from Japan. The word Suminagashi literally translates to “floating ink.” Create lovely and unpredictable patterns using this ancient decorative technique.

Intermediate Binding: Bradel Binding

Intermediate Binding: Bradel Binding

Invented in the 19th century by French binder Alexis Bradel, this binding was meant to be a temporary binding. Refined by others, it developed into a permanent binding sturdier than a case binding, It works well with small or large multi-signature books. In this workshop we will make a small paper covered book and a larger book with the signatures rounded and backed covered with a three piece cloth case.

In this class, learn the basics of trace monotype as well as how to manipulate ink on acrylic glass to create backgrounds, foregrounds, textures, and patterns. Apply these methods in combination with drawing and collage to create a series of layered, one-of-a-kind illustrations. This class is for anyone who feels their print/illustration/design practice is in need of some new energy, and is interested in print techniques that can be replicated at home with simple, affordable materials.

This portfolio makes a good container either to securely transport or store your loose papers, records, etc. Make a 9”x12” to handle standard size papers in class, and leave with the skills to adjust the size for a variety of needs. Crafted with an envelope closure, and made using heavy cover stock and book cloth, the portfolio will be embellished with marbled paper. It makes a great gift!

Jump start your letterpress printing with this weekend intensive! This workshop is perfect for those who want to try letterpress but don’t have time for the six-week course or for rusty letterpress printers in need of a refresher. Learn the fundamentals of paper, ink and design. Then hand set type, carve a simple linoleum cut, and print a small edition of broadside prints on MCBA’s Vandercook presses.

This week-long paper marbling workshop using acrylic paints is designed for both beginning and more experienced marblers. Through instruction and demonstrations, you will learn or review the basic recipes for carrageenan, etc. and the classic patterns. Expand your marbling horizons by marbling on wooden items and a variety of formed paper masks. We will also include side-bar discussions on such things as tool and paint making, and marbling fabrics for those interested. This workshop offers time to build your technique and trouble-shoot with seasoned practitioners as well as develop your color palette and cultivate your marbling style.

Eco Printing is a form of natural dyeing where the colors from plant leaves and flowers are transferred to paper or fabric via steaming or boiling. This class will explore the many possibilities of color and textures found in the bounty of plants that the end of summer provides. Calling all garden lovers! In this lively class, students will transform plant material from their garden (or someone else’s) into beautiful one-of-a-kind prints. Monotypes offer the artist the spontaneity of painting combined with the structure and deliberation of printmaking. In this class, workshop participants will learn the basics then experiment and explore. Students will leave the class with a portfolio of prints celebrating the garden. Go beyond patterns and explore a range of marbling techniques that create special effects! These techniques include: moiré and Spanish moiré, which make the marbled sheet look as if it’s folded or underwater; and over-marbling, which adds depth and complexity to the patterns. Methods for using white space and marbling on colored paper will also be explored.
