Book Arts Camp! Ages 12–15

with Rachel Payne
Tuesday–Friday, July 9–12; 10am–4pm CT

Explore new art mediums in MCBA’s book arts studios! Learn four bindings and several paper decoration techniques in this four-day, in-person book arts immersion designed for ages 12–15! Start by learning the flexagon, an origami-like structure that is part book, part toy! Learn traditional side-stitch bindings, commonly referred to as Japanese, but actually developed in many East Asian countries including Japan, China, Korea, and Vietnam—in Southeastern Asia. Make a tunnel book, which is a tiny diorama-like book that can be embellished with collage, drawings, and more. Last, create a perfect binding which you may find similar to a store-bought notebook, made up of sheets of paper glued together at the spine.

Experiment with paper marbling, paper dying, and other paper decoration techniques. Each day will include binding, paper decoration, and a short field trip outside (weather permitting!) after lunch.

This drop-off workshop is designed for ages 12–15. Students must bring lunch from home; MCBA staff will facilitate lunch and a brief field trip outside (weather permitting).

All skill levels welcome

MCBA offers two scholarship types for workshops—Financial Hardship Scholarships and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Scholarships—to honor equity and increase access and artistic opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the book arts. For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Youth rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.
*If the student (and/or adult caregiver purchasing registration) is eligible for a scholarship, choose the scholarship option at registration.

Please note: Registration closes 7/1 at midnight (CT).
