Beyond Words: The Collectable Book
July 22 – October 21, 2006
Star Tribune Foundation Gallery
Minnesota Center for Book Arts is pleased to have presented an exciting and engaging exhibition highlighting books and book-related art from a variety of public and private collections. Through a diverse set of works, viewers were able to learn how to build a collection, care for and display work, and appreciate the unique communicative strength of artists’ books. Beautiful volumes, photographs, prints, illustrations, sketches, maps, manuscripts and process materials were on display.
Included in the exhibition were rare works from the special collections of the College of St. Catherine and Carleton College, the Walker Art Center, the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies, the Minneapolis Community and Technical College’s Alternative Press Collection, the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library, the Bakken Library, the University of Minnesota’s Kerlan and Hess Collections, the James Ford Bell Library, the Givens Collection of African American Literature, and the Bell Museum of Natural History. In addition, works on loan from Tom Cassidy, Dale Schwie, Steven Stwalley, Rob Rulon-Miller and other friends of MCBA were on view.
