Using the Critical Response Method developed by choreographer Liz Lerman, this group meeting is designed to give objective, supportive feedback on larger, in-progress projects. This class provides structure, accountability, and space for exchanging technical and conceptual ideas. Come prepared to share in-progress work and constructive feedback.

Letterpress I

This introductory workshop offers you a thorough introduction to typesetting and presswork. Perfect for beginners or those who wish to gain additional experience with presses. This class is a prerequisite for Letterpress II.

Dirty Works: Valentine Postcard Printing

Garden Monotypes

Shake off the doldrums of winter and create a portfolio of prints celebrating summer with the magic of monotypes. Transform plant material and stencils into beautiful one-of-a-kind prints. Monotypes offer printers the spontaneity of painting combined with the structure and deliberation of printmaking. The process is fun and freeing for everyone, from beginners to experienced artists. Learn the basics, then experiment and explore the medium under the guidance of two experienced printmakers and instructors.

Introduction to Screen Printing

This course will focus on the basics of screen printing, providing students with the fundamental knowledge necessary to explore and experiment on their own. Learn the basics of design, screen exposure, ink and multi-color printing. Design demos will include hand-drawn images, photocopies, and hand-cut stencils. Printing demos will include registration techniques and successful printing tips. The class will culminate with a group critique of work produced by each during the course as well as a class print exchange.

Platen Letterpress for Correspondence

Explore the outer limits of correspondence art and ephemera by thinking small. We will be executing projects using MCBA’s collection of platen presses and metal type. Instruction will cover multiple color registration and finishing processes like die cutting and perforation. Edition your own original small art objects like facsimile postage stamps and postcards. This class will be a great opportunity to try new tools and techniques that can be expanded on in community studio settings or at home.

Dirty Works: Gelli Plate Printing

Gelli Plate printing is a playful approach to printmaking. This direct printing technique uses a gelatin substrate for printing by hand; no presses! Create beautifully textured images using acrylic paint and stencils. So much fun, it’s addictive.

Dirty Works: Letterpress Printed Exquisite Corpse Poster

Embrace collaboration and whimsy to create a poster using wood type from MCBA’s collection. Starting with a round of the surrealist parlor game exquisite corpse, the group will choose the best collaged phrases to set in type and print on the Vandercook press. Layering color and text will produce a playful and unique poster that exists at the intersection of visual and literary art.

Single-Evening Screen Printing: Collaborative Book Project

Polymer Platemaking for Letterpress

The Ornamental Image

In this class we’ll examine the traditional use of cast metal ornaments and borders and experiment with new applications for pattern design and illustration. We will study specimen books from MCBA’s library and take a deep dive into the drawers of the type collection to learn best practices for typesetting and printing multiple color editions on the Vandercook printing presses.

Weekend Introduction to Letterpress

Jump start your letterpress printing with this weekend intensive! This workshop is perfect for those who want to try letterpress but don’t have time for the six-week course or for rusty letterpress printers in need of a refresher. Learn the fundamentals of paper, ink and design. Then hand set type, carve a simple linoleum cut, and print a small edition of broadside prints on MCBA’s Vandercook presses.

Introduction to Book Arts

A perfect introduction to book arts! First, get your feet wet (literally!) in the paper studio, exploring the Western tradition of papermaking. Next, use screen printing to layer colors and shapes in a collaborative project. Investigate letterpress as you set type and create prints on the Vandercook press. Finally, bind a selection of your handmade and printed papers together into simple folded and pamphlet-stitched books. With a focus on learning several basic techniques, this class is perfect for experimentation and play across disciplines with a look at the relationship between material and process.
