Dirty Works: Foil Zines

Use shiny foil to turn up the volume on an unapologetically loud publication format. Participants will learn how to generate content, execute a layout, print in toner, apply foil, and fold their one-page zines. Each maker will walk away with their own limited edition to distribute in as many venues as possible—letting each idea shine in a new community.

Weekend Introduction to Letterpress

Jump start your letterpress printing with this weekend intensive! This workshop is perfect for those who want to try letterpress but don’t have time for the six-week workshop or for rusty letterpress printers in need of a refresher. Learn the fundamentals of paper, ink and design by hand setting type, carving a simple linoleum cut, and printing a small edition of broadside prints on MCBA’s Vandercook presses.

CMYK Screen Printing

This two-day workshop will introduce the versatility of color layering combined with photo-realistic imagery using CMYK screen printing. CMYK printing involves layering cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to create an expansive range of colors depending on the transparency and opacity of the four CMYK colors. Participants will experiment with photo-realistic imagery, stencil creation involving halftone patterning and/or hand-drawn stencils, ink mixing, and photo emulsion screen developing. Participants will create a small standard edition or varied edition of their own CMYK screenprints and leave with a set of new techniques that can be applied to multiple print processes as well as other printmaking endeavors. Intro to screenprinting or equivalent experience required.

Letterpress I

This introductory workshop offers you a thorough introduction to typesetting and presswork. Essential for any beginning printer, this workshop will cover the basics of Vandercook press operation, studio tools and procedures, typography, image-making techniques, and edition printing. Perfect for beginners or those who wish to gain additional experience with presses. This workshop is a prerequisite for Letterpress II.

Evening Intro to Book Arts

Thursdays, February 27, March 5, 12, 19; 6-9pm

A perfect introduction to book arts! First, get your feet wet (literally!) in the paper studio, exploring the Western tradition of papermaking. Next, use screen printing to layer colors and shapes in a collaborative project. Investigate letterpress as you set type and create prints on the Vandercook press. Finally, bind a selection of your handmade and printed papers together into simple folded and pamphlet-stitched books. With a focus on learning several basic techniques, this class is perfect for experimentation and play across disciplines with a look at the relationship between material and process.

Mokuhanga (Japanese Woodblock Printing)

This four-week workshop will explore the tools and techniques of traditional Japanese woodblock printing, or Mokuhanga. Participants will generate their own imagery and create either 1-2 single layer or multi-layer prints. Explore the history of Mokuhanga as well as how to create your own prints at home without the use of print shop tools and machinery. Learn traditional Mokuhanga carving and printing etiquette, including how to carve a woodblock, register imagery to print on paper, blending colors, hand printing using barrens and wooden spoons, and how to properly sign and number an edition of prints.

Letterpress II

Become proficient on the Vandercook press while creating one collaborative class project and one self-directed project. Acquire technical skills with edition printing, mixing custom ink colors, roller height adjustment, and tympan change. Explore the making of books — sequence and narrative, page layout, image and text interplay, typography, and other considerations that go into producing a small book. Letterpress I or equivalent required.

Intermediate Screen Printing: Fun with Layers!

Wednesdays, April 15-May13; 6-9pm

This project-driven course will focus on the methods, techniques, and procedures employed in screen printing an edition of prints with multiple layers. Gain fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to confidently explore and experiment within the medium of screen printing. Explore registration methods and techniques, creating color separations and artwork for positives, mixing inks, printing effectively, and planning for successful screen prints. Each participant will create at least one edition of prints over the course of the class and will have the opportunity to participate in a group print exchange. Participants will also have the option to make simple prints on apparel. Previous screen printing experience required.

Structure and Content Woven Together

Mondays, April 20, 27, May 4, 11; 6-9pm

In Book Arts, structure is as equally important as form and content. The woven tab structure generates many ideas for content which will be explored in this class. Learn the woven tab binding structure developed by Hedi Kyle, and get an introduction to letterpress printing for some of the text in your book. Discussions of content and idea generation will take place along with demonstrations of reproduction techniques and decorative techniques for print and binding. Leave the class with a finished book and ideas for how structure and content work together to create a cohesive book. Some bookbinding experience required.
